Hello I am making blow filing wooden fountain pens . I was thinking of using Mahogany for the pen. Do the member of the forum think Mahogany is good wood or is something else better to make an elegant pen.

I look forward to the discussion on wood choices for my pens.

Yours

I have just acquired a nice bundle of old (19th century) mahogany from a local pub which is being demolished ,should make some nice pens.

Confused ?...You will be !

Any kind of wood is fine if sealed properly. For the aesthetic, It depends on the part of woods is used. It would be boring if grain is plan straight. It would be better if wood has complicated figure or at least cross cut. There are so many kind of mahoganies out there. Buy from reputable pen blank suppliers and pay extra for the good grade if you want real elegance. Good luck!

Mahogany would not be one of the best choices because it's an open-grained wood and usually very straight grained. It's a top choice for tables and chests because it's so stabile and some mahogany can have lovely figure, but the run-of -the-mill mahogany would not be very interesting.

I agree with Yoshi that you should check with merchants who sell wood pen blanks. Try
