The Purple Ink Of Enzo Ferrari

No luck.

The lady who currently run the shop is too young and the only thing she knows is the factory does not exist anymore.

Her father (the original owner) probably knows better, but was not in (I'll try again).

Got a nice bottle of blue Quink BTW, alas no time for the Museum.

Contacted the Museum at Modena ( not the one in Maranello ), the man said yellow and purple are the most important colours in the museum. There is a little store in the museum were they sell different Ferrari parafernalia but no ink and as he putted it, little chance they would start with it in the near future. He also said there were plenty handwritings of Enzo displayed, all in viola.

I know nothing of this, but am very fascinated and happy to be following along.

It could easily be vintage Parker Quink they made that in larger bottles and Sheaffer made Violet too. But I ordered some Omas Violet.. It's a beautiful purple color and relatively close to the plates above. Seems to me somehow fitting as I see Omas as the Ferrari of Italian pen making. I really like the ink too.

  • 2 weeks later...

Met the owner today, had a nice chat.

Found even a Japanese fan came and visit him precisely for the same quest (he had a Japanese magazine to prove it...).

The ink was made by Gnocchi, supplied to the Drake in one liter bottles.

No more available, unfortunately.

He told me somebody already tried to resurrect it, but the royalties requested from Ferrari for branding it were crazily high compared to the sales potential.

Before you ask, he doesn't remember if he had a favourite pen brand/model...

WOW! What a quest!

Thank you so much!

I was afraid this thread was dead.

(side note: wow the Japanese fan flew all the way there for the same quest? That is some serious dedication...is he a member of FPN?)

This is the type of stuff that makes FPN so much more than just people showing off their latest purchase lol!

Entrico, you have my highest salute B)

Cheers!

I think the Japanese was more a Ferrari's fan than a FP's fan, but he visit Olivieri specifically for my same purpose.

Maranello is a pagan pilgrimnage site, with people coming from all over the world to visit the museum, eat at the "Il Cavallino" restaurant and "feel" the place in general.

There are several shops where you can buy souvenirs, and with some Euros (I think 50 Euro for half an hour) you can rent a Ferrari and try the thrill.

If you're lucky, you can hang yourself to the fences around Fiorano's test site and hear the noise music...

The really hard core ones of course come with their own Ferrari...

Did some more research...

Gnocchi inks were produced by Francesco Rubinato...Old fashion, (often both ink and bottle hand made) classic Italian ink producers

and yes...although they don't mention Mr. Enzo...They still make their Purple inks  (I wonder if the formula is similar...)

Go nuts!~

Fascinating stuff thanks so much. I really think Omas is pretty close, a soft purple or violet ink. And if memory serves me correctly Rubinato makes inks for a lot of people.

Where did you find this info?

AFAIK Gnocchi was in Milano and directly produced several kind of inks (China, for stamps, for FPs).

But to add confusion, this seller (crazy price) says the ink was made by Gunther Wagner (=Pelikan?). Edited by enricof

I get the impression that the closest ink to those old formulations is Gamma Violet from Russia. The formulation appears not to have changed since the 1930s. I have about 1cc of it left which I am saving till I can get more. It is quite inexpensive at around US$1.00 for 70cc but is virtually unobtainable outside of Russia and the costs of shipping it are prohibitive. It is only sold in flats of 24 bottles and I have been trying to organize a shipment for years now. Somewhere on FPN is a writing sample which I made, but the search engine has defeated me. If you can find it, compare the colour and characteristics with Enzo's written sample.

That is the ink, but I had forgotten about that one. The one I was thinking of was a written review I did, including water test. But the search mechanism does not seem to go back far enough. I love violet inks and use them all the time and I really want more of this one.

Of the violet inks you have used: Which one offers the greatest water resistance?

Thank you very much Enrico for solving this puzzle... It's a pity this ink is no longer available.
