Finally Found Tn Passport Tr Inserts! (Made Them.)

Thanks to the excellent advice from this board I took the plunge last night and converted one of my TR writing pads into three passport-sized notebooks. The only way to get TR paper in the passport refill turned out to be making it myself.. AND it was way easier than I expected.

A few pictures (I'll resize them in a couple minutes.)

The almost finished product - I just needed to round the edges to cap it off.

Cutting the pad to the right size.

The piercing guide.

Starting the stitches with some old-style dental floss I had laying around.

Bent the needle to make stitching easier.

Completed book. 4 registers of 8 sheets for 128 pages total. First book was 3 registers of 10 sheets but I wanted a smaller, tighter feel to them.

The three books from today's effort. A white one, then two brown ones whose covers came from an old file folder.

Once I was done I took them down to Staples to get the edges sheared. The manager there was so helpful and had such a nice touch on the shear that I barely lost any paper on the edges. I gave her the white book for her own use and brought my two new ones home.

Total cost:

TR paper pad - I had this from a trade of Noodler's ink awhile back.

Heavy paper cover - a repurposed file folder.. at least 10 years old.

Thread - an old spool of waxed dental floss.

Needle - from my wife's sewing box - free! :D

Cutting board - an old Red-n-Black notebook.

Cutter - a box-cutter from the toolbox.

Staples - a couple of bucks for shearing.

Call it a great day!

A great day for sure!

How did you attach the cover? And how are they holding up after a couple weeks?

I put a bead of glue 1/4"W x full length of page on the first and last pages without gluing the spine to the cover. The cover itself has an extra little bend in it down the center so when you open the book it just flops open and stays flat.

This is a Davis Leatherworks cover, so it's 1/2" taller than a Passport notebook. Because of this difference I slit the cover just enough to let the rubber band slip to it's shorter length, but not ruining the stitching.

And here's the rubber band between the middle registers. There's almost no tension on it so the book won't tear apart.

And finally, after three weeks of being carried around and used, here's a look at my TN-alike:

(I love hipstamatic.)
