Dogs And Cats And Pens... Oh My!

He looks VERY interested in the pens.

~ farmdogfan:

Indeed, Yubi finds fountain pens fascinating.

Yet he's never lunged at them, never touched one, and never shown any sign of wanting to do more than look at them.

He's that way about everything except his meals.

Somehow he's decided that life is a “look but don't touch” proposition.

I'm actually vigilant when making these images, prepared to snatch away the pens, if necessary.

It's been clear that if any object has been extensively handled by me, with my scent on it, Yubi has high interest in it.

OMD! He is the most gorgeous Pekingese I've ever seen! What a sweet looking puppy <3. Just out of curiosity, how did you manage to entice the breeder to sell you one of his/her puppies, since they're rarely sold? I can see why the breeder is very well respected. Yubi takes my breath away. Will you be showing him? He looks perfect, to me, at least :-).

~ IrishEyes:

Thank you so much for your wonderful post about Yubi.

Without a doubt, he's the loveliest Pekingese I've ever seen, with a sweet temperament to match his appearance.

Acquiring genuine, high quality purebred puppies in the area where I work and live is wholly unlike elsewhere.

Every aspect is secretive, with an overwhelming need to have several middlemen with strong connections.

A pair of my former students were both highly capable and well-connected.

After a discreet tip from me, they approached the prominent physician who bred Yubi, asking if he might ever have puppies to offer.

He generally keeps all of his puppies for showing. Yubi's mother is a Grand Champion. The breeder isn't interested in the puppy trade, but exclusively pursues breed improvement and benched shows.

As it happened, he had a 4-month old male puppy — Yubi — who had very minor flaws around an eye and a tiny defect in a leg. As he seeks the ideal, he decided to make Yubi available to a suitable home.

I've previously raised Pekingese, and life on a university campus is congenial for the breed.

His coat truly feels like the finest sable. (I have a Russian sable cap, with a similar feel) He often shakes it to look his best.

He's super-affectionate, non-stop kissing and happy tail-wagging. Returning home has become a joy with such an enthusiastic greeting.

Next week he'll be vaccinated for rabies. He'll be neutered in early July.

Having a new writing partner is a real joy.

Those defects are very welcome, if they've allowed Yubi to go to your home. I still wonder what the defects are. Is one of them the small white tuft under Yubi's right eye?

You're an astute dog observer!

That's exactly right.

That white tuft wouldn't be acceptable to certain dog show judges, but has no effect on Yubi as a companion dog.

His legs weren't quite as bowed as most Pekingese, so his rolling gait is less pronounced.

He's full of charm.

I'll post a portrait taken early this morning, following his numerous kisses to greet me.

OMD! That is one of the cutest puppy photos I think I've ever seen! You are so lucky to have been able to bring Yubi home. I'm incredibly envious. I wish you lived a LOT closer than China, so he and Pippin could have play dates :-). What a cute little goofy expression <3.

Yubi is very much “what you see is what you get”.

His personality matches the portrait.

Cute...upbeat...low-key...extremely affectionate...comical.

He's unlike any puppy I've ever known.

Greetings from Yubi to Pippin from around the globe!

Yubi is delighted that you like him.

Intense tail wagging in return!

He's the most babyish, low-key puppy I've ever known.

Utterly innocent, without guile.

He won't even chew his toys, merely looking at them.

Yubi is definitely a cutie!

Oh that face! That face seems to be saying "Can we celebrate MY half-birthday too?"

Yubi's half-birthday will be on 12 June.

He's the personification of sweet-tempered charm.

He loves to watch yours truly writing with a fountain pen, never lunging to bite it, but quietly watching.

He really is a sweetie. And I say that as someone who really isn't a dog person.
Unfortunately, neither of the current cats are particularly photogenic. And the dilute Tortie really dislikes having her picture taken for some reason. A couple of our older cats were incredibly photogenic, especially the Maine Coon (brown and white) and one of the old Tortoiseshell (the other one, the brindle Tortie, was too much all the same color, with almost no white on her -- Peri had enough variation and white splotches that she got herself immortalized in fresco (literally -- I took a workshop in the technique, and used a photo of her as the piece I was working from; not sure where it ended up though, because the instructor forgot to tell us to keep the pieces moistened with water while curing, and pretty much everyone's panels cracked...).

OMD! I am SO in love with Yubi, and I swear, if your secretive breeder would sell me one, I'd have his sibling (hopefully) here in a flash!

Only once before in my life have I loved someone else's dog as much as any of my own. His name is Carlos, and he lives in Hawaii. Nothing I could do would convince his human to let me bring him home ( :lticaptd: ), so I was able to find a puppy with his sweet personality and looks, and brought Him home.... I'm afraid I'd never find a Peke in this country that even comes close to the perfection that is your lovely, sweet, and gentle Yubi

Yubi joins me in expressing gratitude for your very warm comment.

Yubi's temperament is such that I've yet to discover what he dislikes.

There may be a brace of activities or actions which aren't his favorites, but he's never yet expressed anything about that.

He's babyish, docile, easygoing and surprisingly low maintenance.

Maine Coon and Tortoiseshells are highly photogenic. Both are especially pleasing to the eye.

Yubi is honored...and flattered...by your kind words.

He's from a show breeder who essentially never sells puppies.

That Yubi was made available to me was the culmination of a series of improbable events.

In a very real sense, his arrival into my life was “meant to be”.

During his first full bath today, he was quietly cooperative. The five hour drying out period resulted in a gorgeous puppy free of mats, smelling fresh.

He's a textbook case of having a personality which matches appearance.

Sweet-tempered, mild in everything, exceptionally affectionate, accepting of whatever comes his way — Yubi is a cherub.

Several times each day I count my blessings, numbering Yubi at the top of the list.
