Sheaffer Intrigue (Family Photos)

When I start selling down to just the pens I actually use, my Pilot Vanishing Point / Capless will be among the first to go. Great idea, but I can't adjust to having a clip where my index finger wants to be.

The Intrigue, now, that was a pretty good pen. Aside from the filler and that "innovative" cap design, the Intrigue is a good pen. I did try, only once, to pull the converter to use a cartridge. After I couldn't figure out how to work the sort-of-piston. That's how I learned how to ous/pull/and twist at the same time: got the converter to fill.

I don;t think I will spend $150 for another Intrigue, but it's a good pen. I think Ron Zorn said that the Sheaffer repair folks looked at the first Intrigue and said, "Here comes trouble", but that, underneath the fussy filler you can feel the original Sheaffer quality.

Oooo. Interesting!

I love my Vanishing Points. They were my gateway pen. But for some unknown reason I hardly ever pull them out anymore. I have waaaay too many pens, which has something to do with it. I know that when I do use one I think, "I should use these more often." They've always been smooth and reliable for me. I wouldn't go so far as to say that everyone else should have one.

But the 2000. Yeah, it's an okay pen. I don't have any specific complaints (well, except that I find all piston fillers to be extremely annoying to flush). It's kinda cool that the 2000 still looks modern considering how long ago it was designed. But overall, it just doesn't call to me. I'd love to hear why you regret getting one.

Capless: Bought a M nib, but writes like an F, and the whole system is too bothersome. Not a great balance as well.

2000: had one with a really bad nib. Had to send it back to Lamy. Then it got stuck in the post and when I got it back after 6 months or so it had a better nib but still mediocre as compared to the gold nibs on my Accent Brilliant or My Dialog3.

I have one of the FP's in the finish 2nd from left (Whale Shark?) and a pencil 8th from left. The fit and finish was a little spotty, but it is a great writer, unique in design and it is one that I have never had the heart to sell off. The OEM filling system is all I have ever used, and it has always worked perfectly. The unusual finishes are still neat today. I would love to know how they created them.

Isn't it funny that there are all kinds of modern pens that have little issues with skipping, flow, etc yet Sheaffer's were bulletproof even when the handwriting was on the wall for the company.

I love this pen.

A caution for anyone looking to buy one of these pre-owned:

Be sure to inspect the barrel for cracks where it screws into the section. Two we acquired recently have cracks in this spot. I think people mistakenly open the pen there, not understanding the whackadoodle Intrigue filling system, and the plastic is thin and not up to the wear and tear of opening and closing. Sheaffer may even have sealed this originally.

I remember wanting one of the Whale Shark Intrigues when they first came out. I have the ballpoint, rollerball, and the fountain pen now. The filling system is a bit strange, but mine works quite well. I actually find it not too complication. I did drop my ballpoint on concrete a while back and it now has deep gouges in the blue finish :( But, my fountain pen is one of my prized pens. I could look at it for hours.

People are still breaking Intrigues when they use the converter because it's not your typical converter and too many people are allergic to reading the instructions!

Revised Sheaffer Intrigue FP filling instruction. Scroll to the very end of this page -

http://www.pendemonium.com/filling.htm

Also, you don't want to break too many of the Intrigue converters because they are starting to become scarce.

Thanks pengoddess for posting the link to the revised filling instructions. I'm looking to purchase this pen in the Seal color/pattern but, based on all I've read, I'm a bit scared to attempt the first fill--weird scary grinding sounds!

I appreciate the link.

Can someone answer a question about how securely the convertor is supposed to fit into the "drawer"? It seems to sit in there in place but I am able to spin it with my finger. Somehow, I'm thinking that a reservoir to be filled with ink shouldn't easily "spin." What should I do to get it firmly seated into the drawer mechanism? –I've never filled it as I was afraid it would leak ink everywhere because of this.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Once you screw the drawer in place it will fit securely.
