Hello!

My name is Gary and have just started an interest in Fountain Pens - not sure what it is about them, the more I read the more I like. This year will mark my 25th year in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and my family and I are posted back to Halifax, Nova Scotia 02 July. I've purchased a Kreko Fountain Pen from a member of this group - very excited to receive and start using it. I have also purchased, but has not arrived yet, a Lamy Safari from a business here in Canada called Stylo. What amazes me about Fountain Pens is the number of resources on its history - I'm currently looking into what the best book is on the subject - I'm going to poke around this website, I'm certain there will be info on that.

Welcome, Gary !

Liquid ink is attracted to paper, and will flow on its own to the paper at slightest contact. All you need do is guide it.

Writing with a fountain pen encourages writing. Writing things out longhand actually uses a lot more muscle and

brain function than pushing buttons. It is an active and creative activity to form, intentionally, every character on

the paper. There is immediate gratification in the success, and, therefore, highly therapeutic.

(If you are crazy, like many pen collectors, this is important.)

At the peak of fountain pen manufacturing, when "pen" meant "fountain pen", two of the most innovative and

prolific companies were Esterbrook and Parker. There is good reading about them.

When I was in the US Navy, I assembled a volume of format letters for shipmates to use in writing home.

I was assumed to have a lot of skill in writing letters. (I received letters from five college coeds. But, that

is another story.) May their sweethearts never meet and compare letters. Amen.

I use to rub the address with a candle. Look into waterproof inks, and what Noodler's calls "bulletproof" inks.

Write with joy.

Thanks for the Welcome. I knew that if I threw in that I am in the Navy a few military would come out of the woodwork. Thanks for the link to Parker and Esterbrook - I'm going to give them a read now. I do a great deal of writing and typing and I am currently doing some graduate studies where I outline many of my papers by hand - using a fountain pen seems to be a natural connection. I stumbled across a really cheap fountain pen (until the pens I order get to me) by a German manufacturer by the name of "Online" - a verrry cheap feel to it, but it works fine. Thanks again for the welcome!

I've noted those titles and will see if my local bookstore has them in stock - if not I'm sure I could order through Amazon. Thanks.
