Howard - this is just an awesome pen. It must be really light to use.

BTW, isn't the base for the flange a bit too long? I looks like the nib is a bit too far out. It is a nice holder nonetheless.

This is really bizarre, I know, but there's a method (or at least a semi-good reason) to my madness. I went to the post office to mail a package in a priority mail box. The guy told me that the box I had it in was no longer in use. Little did I know boxes had an expiration date. More importantly, what the he** was I gonna do with that huge stack of priority mail boxes that I had in the basement? So, I figured I'd try to make a pen with them. Why not, right, I mean what else am I gonna make out of them? This is constructed with priority mail boxes, CA glue, spray shellac and spray paint. I'm sure it's some sort of federal offense to improperly use an official post office cardboard box, but if they come after me I'll go with the "you guys told me they were trash" defense. The pictures are in order, left to right, top to bottom.

Well I've seen everything now. LOL! Don't worry, if the USPS comes after you, I'll make some calls on your behalf. LOL!

This is certainly one of the most unexpected "repurpose" jobs I've seen. Looks awesome, Howard.

I am very much in awe about the huge range of variation, the beauty, the inventiveness and also the humour that you all showed here in designing these different kinds of penholders! Thanks for sharing these.

That's amazing. What's it like to use?

Thanks. It's very light, but not as light as I would have thought. I guess all the glue, shellac and paint build up. Writes very well, other than the design flaw that Salman picked up on (see below).

Salman, you are exactly right...I missed the boat on the flange base. I usually start that section of one of these pens larger than I intend to leave it then cut it down. By the time I got to the "cutting it down" part, I already had shellac and glue all over the thing and was just WAY too lazy to cut it, coat it and sand it. It still writes pretty well but it's a bit off on the alignment.

Thanks Zemof.

Yeah, that's right, you got some connections there. Tell 'em I was temporarily insane from all the glue fumes!

Here's the result of my latest bout of lunacy. My son, who helps me work on these things every now and then (he's 16, has a truck and a girlfriend...I take what time I can get!), asked me if I would make him a pen. Seeing this as an opportunity, I told him that, if he'd learn to write with it, I'd make him "any kind" of pen he wanted. Well, he said he wanted one that looked like a "Daedric (sp???) Blade". WTH is a Daedric Blade, I asked? Apparently, it's some kind of really, really bad knife/sword from a video game he plays. Being a Space Invaders video game kind of guy, I asked him to get me a picture of the thing. This, then, is my interpretation of the "Daedric Blade" (and I still have no idea how to spell it).

While it looks long, it's actually a bit shorter than some of the long tailed pens I've made, about 11 inches. It's not exactly well balanced, but it doesn't feel horrible when you write with it either. The "blade" portion, while you can't really tell it from this photo, has a silver metallic pigment on it that gives it a very nice sheen. The good news is, he was very pleased. The bad news is I told him that he had to practice with something a bit more practical until he got the basics down. He took it pretty well. Then got in his truck and went to see his girlfriend!

Oh my gosh, that's amazing! As a teenager, I guess I just find this really cool, seeing as I enjoy the game it's from. Also, you're spelling it right, so no worries there lol.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, I truly appreciate them! I have relayed them all to my son, who is elated that people like his pen design. I made him go away though when he started telling me how we could do one based on Grand Theft Auto!

Soon he’ll be more of a collector than writer… so if I love to read, can i ask for a Roald Dahl holder, Jane Austen, Stephen King, all the fictional characters? A Sherlock Holmes-inspired pipe holder would be cool!!! :D

A syringe-styled holder might be more appropriate for Sherlock Holmes, what with his morphine and seven per cent cocaine injections!
