Here's my latest. It's an attempt to recreate a pen that's in the Tate collection. The Tate pen is of "unknown" manufacture and I have no idea exactly what types of wood were used in it. Also, the Tate pen is broken on the end so I really have no idea whether or not it had a finial. Seemed to me like it really needed one, though!

The foot is ebony. The smaller rings are cocobola, ebony, cocobola and bolivian rosewood. The tail is bolivian rosewood as well. The "polka dots" are mother of pearl.

I really like pens with the angled cut on the foot, seems to make them easier to dip, and I suppose that's why this one caught my eye.

Hope you enjoy it.

Very cool!!! Looks somewhat Art Deco with the MOP inlays, multiple spacers and complementary grains and tones.

I like it.

If you say GULLIBLE real slowly,

it sounds like ORANGES.

Howard - that is one lovely holder. I prefer the angled cut on the foot too.

Salman

Thanks Salman, I appreciate it. I'm trying to figure out a way to bevel the foot and still keep the angled cut. I think it would look great and be highly functional as well.

Those are terrific, Stompie! What's the Lilly style holder made of?

Here is my attempt at crafting a Lilly style holder. My son came up with the basic format for the blank while we were playing around with different pieces of wood (having spent an inordinate amount of time gluing and sanding, I think the kid is a sadist). The dark wood is wenge and I have no idea what the other is (more of that wood turners grab bag stuff). I'm sure Brian can figure it out!

The white rings are an inlay of micro pearl pigmented epoxy. There are very thin red rings also (don't know if the picture picked them up) and they are actually colored veneer. I've never tried veneer in a pen before. Interesting process.

Hope you enjoy looking at it.

Couple of new holders that I've been working on. They have a different type of cut for the flange. I like the angled cut but also the bevel on the end so I tried to incorporate the two into one design. Let me know what you think.

This one is snakewood and something I'm not sure of. More from the turner grab bag of assorted wood. I made this one particularly for little nibs like the Gillott 303 and the Esterbrook 355 and 356.

This one is pambil palm and zebra wood with simulated ivory accent rings. It was inspired by a Lilly pen I saw on Zanerian.com. I really like this one, kind of has a formal look to it.

This one is 8 1/2 inches long but feels really light. Very comfortable to write with. I'd never tried segmenting the finial on the tail before, seemed like something different.

Thanks for looking,

Howard

I like the cut away's on the foot - seems like a great idea!

Nice looking holders there!

Charles Paxton-Zaner was amongst the most noteable calligraphers/penman/teachers from the American Golden Age of Penman. He was skilled as a calligrapher/penman, a teacher (of both practical handwriting and calligraphy) and as an illustrator. In 1888 he founded the Zanerian College of Penmanship, from which the Zaner-Bloser company today originates.

As reported in the Business Educator penman's magazine, on June. 20th 1906, as a gesture of appreciation by his students, C.P Zaner was presented with an 8 foot long Oblique penholder:
