And Musinkman - thanks for the nib and the cover, nice touch Dude!

I also got me a box of old esterbrook nibs, so much fun to be had :)

Next project for you, seeing that you mentioned sandalwood!!!!! Like a carrot oblique holder - same dimensions but this one is to be left totally raw, no finish on it at all because it is the aroma of the sandalwood I want when writing  I really enjoy that aroma
What ya say to that Buddy?

Oh, best I say "Thanks for this Pale Moon holder" Stunning work!!! as usual.

Hey there Stomperoo...sorry for the delay in replying, had a litte out-of-town excursion today. I'm glad it finally arrived, I knew it was getting time for it to get there. Isn't that Pale Moon Ebony some eerie stuff. Nice though, and tough as nails. I put 3 coats of clear on it because I didn't want the light woods to stain from a wayward ink drop or whatever. Even so, try to avoid it (I know, that goes without saying). It should be quite impervious though, as long as it's wiped dry right away.

You want Sandalwood...you got it, brother. PM me when you get a chance.

Thanks for showing it off, Stompie. I liked the feel of that holder so much that I made one for myself just like it (except piece of Pale Moon didn't have any figuring...it's just a plain jane looking thing). But it is my current "go-to" pen because it is so comfortable in my hand.

Thanks again, Stompie, and I'm glad you like it!!!

By the way Sal, I sent you a couple of pieces of sheet brass a few days ago. You told me that you were running low on it for your flanges, and I have plenty of the stuff. It probably hasn't arrived yet...I sent it as a "letter" and therefore didn't complete any customs forms. I think it will get there, but ya never know with all the crazy rules these days.

Brian - I received your beautiful letter and the brass sheets today. I enjoyed the lovely writing and will try to put the brass to goo use. It is definitely thinner than the piece I have and much flimsier but it seems to work fine in your holders so I'm looking forward to using it.

Thanks,

Salman

Geez Salman, it took so long to get there; that's just crazy. I was afraid it got snagged in customs because I didn't attach a customs declaration to it. I figured it would pass as a "letter" because the brass sheets are flat. I like the .010 guage...I tried some .015 and it was soooo stiff and thick that I could not shape it. The brass you have is likely the same thickness but probably a stiffer temper? I hope you can use it...if not just pitch it in the trash. LOL I somehow accidentally over-ordered and I have 2 five-foot rolls of that stuff. Enough to make flanges until I retire to the boneyard. LOL

You are welcome, and I hope that you find it suitable.

Brian

My favorite oblique?

Easy peasy lemon squeezy... it's always the next one I ask Brian to craft as soon as he ships out the latest one!

And these two stunners arrived today!

Pristine, painstakingly perfectly packed and balanced to perfection!

Brian, the penned note was the crowning touch. I try to follow the same dictates with my own clients but this was the first time I've ever been the recipient. Thank you again for your patience.

Cheers!

Thank you for posting the photos of them, Doug! I'm glad they arrived safely and even more happy that you are pleased with them. Load 'em up with some McCaf or Higgs and let 'em rip. I'm anxious to see what they do in your hands!

Wait till you get the next one...oh man, that's a pretty pen! (It's that jet black Magnusson copy with the white and red stripes, for those who are curious).

I wanted to keep it sooo bad, but blonde wifey said it had to go. *sniff*

She said I have wayyyyy too many pens, and wayyyyy too many guitars. And she is right...but geez....a guy gotta have his toys, eh?

Wow...

I have been a drooling lurker of this thread since its inception. I never chimed in much as my current budget won't allow me to partake hah.

But this... just wow! I couldn't help but share my lust! Well done sir! I look forward to the day when I can pen something with one of your Magnusson staffs.

Thank you Michael! I really appreciate those words. Is that you with Mr. Sull? :-)

I've been seeing your Spencerian...man, you're gettin' pretty good with that stuff.

Are you learning that stuff from Michael Sull?

Thank you very much! Trying to keep up with Schin haha. It has become quite an obsession.

Yes that is Mr. Sull and I at the 2013 LA Pen Show. I wish I was learning directly from him, I have never had the chance to attend a class or workshop with him. One day! hah I study out of the "New Standard Practical Penmanship" & "New Spencerian Compendium" books primarily. But tend to venture off course and "play" a lot hah.

I have been designing my ideal pen staff in my head, and look forward to the day I can commission you for it.

Salman,

As long as you aren't making removable flanges, like the Zanerian, you can reinforce .01" brass by doubling up one of the layers. Leave a little extra metal on the side you're going to pin into the holder. Cut one flap to length, but fold the other to the inside (between the layers) and trim it just short of the semicircular bend. You get the ease of adjustment of .01" brass with the stiffness of .015".

Hi all, though I'd post a photo of my latest creation (again, thanks to Musinkman for answering my annoying questions!)

http://i1349.photobucket.com/albums/p743/hzsimms/LT1_zps50ef13f1.jpg

This one is 12 3/8 inches from tip to tip. I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not certain what kind of wood the front section of the pen is made from. It came in one of those wood turner grab bags and wasn't labelled. Bubinga maybe? Musinkman will spot it right off. The tail is canary wood. The trim rings are simulated ivory and red pearl acrylic. The little finial is also made from synthetic ivory and was an absolute pain in the rear end to make. Perhaps the first and last one of those I ever fool with!

Anyway, thanks for looking and let me know what you think.

Oh Ho!!!! Nice work, Howard. Fantastic longhandle there! I like the synthetic ivory finial very much...I was thinking of trying that! Beautiful pen. The front section of that pen is Wenge wood. Cool job!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting it!

Yes - that works very well.

I have done that when I started out making flanges. I don't like fixing the flanges in permanently and you can get one of the layers to double up and still get the little lip to do a Zanerian style insert and stabilize thing with them. You just need the hole in the holder to be a bit bigger.

On another one I simply cut and inserted the middle layer in an existing flange and turned the lip so the stabilizer held it in place - worked surprisingly well and did not move about at all which was a pleasant surprise as I expected some movement.

I don't mind the stiffer brass at all. I think adjusting the stiffer ones is easier than the softer material as they don't deform and buckle as readily but that might be just me being clumsy :-)

Thanks for the tip - its good to know others are going the same route.

We can't keep up with Schin, Michael. I've been trying to catch up to her for a while now, but that girl is a mega-talented writer, artist, graphic designer, and lord knows what else. Just when I start feeling "kind of good" about my writing, all I have to do is glance at one of her letters and my mouth falls open once again. She's one of those "naturals" who has such a wondrous sense of how to arrange things...and an incredible pen technician too. She freaks me out, that girl!

I have given her the nickname of "Schin The Pen".

That girl can freaking WRITE, ya hear me? :-)

Howard --- Could be Wenge, but looks too smooth for it, unless you filled the pores. Wenge is pretty coarse with lots of large pores. That looks to me more like Ebony or African Blackwood, which is used a lot for finials on hollow forms and such. Both of the latter species are smooth with small pores like Maple. and may show some figure if they aren't too dark. Nice looking holder by the way!
