An Ebonite Pen From Calicut

Recommended Posts

Hi friends,

This is an ebonite pen made at my home town ,Calicut by Kim & Co. Its an eyedropper.

As this model carries no particular name I would like to call it as model 2011 in referance to the year it introduced.

Section shape is comfortable for a grip

I like this cigar shape.

Cap end "jewel"

Finned ebonite feed.

Its light weight but with a reasonable heft. Though the nib is ordinary m2011 hosts a quality ebonite feed where its strength lies in. The pen never missed a beat till the date.

I like it. It uses the fine craftsmanship to make is look distinguished instead of a lot of fancy extra pieces (although I like pens with those as well).

Actually when ordering you have to say rounded end variation of their mainstay small model. Also specify that you want black colour.

Looks nice! I've wanted a few Kim & Co pens since Hari posted one a while ago.

How is the pen when it comes to not burping ink?

dear de- pen-dent,

Burping of ink hasnt have happened to me with this pen. I think it may due to the feed which can buffer it.

And dear Hari.. I bought the pen not from Kim & co but from Krishna pens and watches though it is available in both shops. Apart from this it available at TBS book stall also.

Mohan, Lovely photos. I have privately named the Kim and Co. megapen as Calicut Ebonite. Its a very good writer and has given me no problems so far as compared to Guider ebonites (lousy nibs and lousier feeds). I twist it open with 2-3 turns which makes it better than even Ratnams which could take up to 5 twists (Groan!). I only wish the pen maker would put a bigger and chunkier nib on it, and all will be fine. The good news is that Kim and Co. are open to reasoinable modifications at the time the customer places his order. Your photos have tempted me to order for one more. talk of pen-lust...

I'll add my name to the list. How can I get one outside of Calicut - or India?

I've got two Guiders, and in both I've installed replacement nibs, and (with those) they are good, but not great, writers. Beautiful though. And I would like to get me one of these...

In case anyone is interested I have a few of these that I can part with. I have the jumbo ones, some of them I have modified the section to accept a M1000 nib unit. I may be contacted by PM.

+No plain black ones, like in the OP? The mottled green one also looks lovely. PM sent.

I was informed today that Kim and Co. does not make their own pens. I wonder if they use a similar maker to Deccan.

You are right. Kim and Co is only an outlet. The pen-maker, I am told, has been in this profession for over fifty years. Sadly, the last of the fast-dwindling artisan class in the country. As I understand it, he is currently the only one making and selling FPs in Kerala (?). Even Deccan Pen House gets their pens made by pen makers in and around Hyderabad and Secundrabad. Pick up what you can from these folks before the lights go out.

A veteran pen-maker by the name of Ramachandran who resides in Calicut. I was informed so by the owner of Kim and Co.

India time is GMT+5:30 Shops are open typically from 11:00 to 19:00hrs. I am sure a long distance call to India can be made to talk to the shop and find out if there is a way they can send the pens across. The contact details of Kim and Co are given in this thread:
