A Great Pen for $50-$90

ChickenGod

Recommended Posts

I'm worried that I will get scammed... What are some precautions I should take when buying from the Marketplace? I don't like buying used either... I may just get the Cross Century II because it is sold on Amazon.com

Thats it, I'm getting the Cross Century II. It is just so much more convenient. What ink should I get for my FP?!?!

Or... should I get another MODERN pen that I won't need to buy from eBay or the Marketplace that is $50-$90, $100

I feel pretty comfortable buying from the FPN Marketplace. With a few exceptions, fountain pen collectors seem to be an honest bunch. If you want a Cross pen, you can probably find a better deal outside of Amazon. I haven't checked Cross prices, but all of the other pens I've seen on Amazon have high prices.

If you do get a Cross, would you let us know what you think of it?

I MAY get the Cross... I haven't fully decided on it yet... Are there any other modern, GOOD LOOKING, $50-$90 pens that you recommend? Also, what inks?!

I haven't read this entire thread so I don't know what others have recommended but I think that the Pelikan 200 or 250 is the best in your price range. I used a 250 almost daily for a few years and I recently got a 200 for my son. Both pens have been very reliable writers and my son and I like the way they look and feel.

I like Waterman inks the best. They have nice saturated colors but they have never gummed up my pens.

Hello all! What pen should I buy that is in the price range between $50-$90? This will be my only pen. I would like a medium sized nib because that is how big I usually write. I was thinking about the Cross Century II Fountain Pen, but then someone told me about the Parker "51". Which one should I get? I am open to suggestions! Thanks everyone!

What a fun thread! I'm late to this party, but that's never stopped me jumpng in anyway...

My return to FPs was with a Cross Century II my wife bought me. Shortly after I bought a second one to go with it (what? only one ink colour? you must be joking...)

Those two satisfied me for a couple of years. Just recently I've gone through a hyper-splurge-accumulation phase. I think the problem was finally completing the camera kit I was happy with (if you're interested, a pair of Leica Ms - they're not as expensive as their rep when you buy old and used like I have - and a nice set of lenses) and transferring the bug elsewhere.

In three months I've bought 5 more nice FPs (not all have arrived yet) including a couple in the GBP200+ range, something I never thought I'd do. In my defence, all my family gave me folding Christmas presents, which had to go somewhere "nice". Pens are nice :D

I swore that was the end of it for a while (at least the summer), but over the weekend I was ordering a few bottles of ink (yeah, ink, now there's another addiction) and ended up throwing a Lamy Vista into the basket as well. At least it's a relatively inexpensive one.

But what's my point...?

Threefold:

1) Having spent all this money, I can tell you without a doubt that that first Cross will always be inked, not just because it was a birthday present from my wife, but because it is just so reliable and solid. It has never given me any trouble with any ink, and being metal-bodied I know from experience t can take the punishment. Of course, there will be other pens alongside ;)

2) One of my next pen purchases will almost definitely be through a WTB for a user "51" - because I want to see what all the fuss is about, and I really do like the look of them.

3) I do believe it is a scientific impossibilty to have but one fountain pen.

Welcome to the club!

I purchased a Century II from Amazon a little while ago. They actually had a pretty good price (about $45 instead of the standard $80). I love the pen; it is quite slender, but its a great writer. I would like to try a fine nib, as the medium is quite broad and wet.

Amazon partners with other retailers for many of their products, and prices through these retailers are generally not as good. The Century II came directly from Amazon, however. At the time, Amazon had Cross ATXs, sold through another retailer, at the standard price of $80.

Personally, I love the styling on the Century II. They have a classic, American look about them. Sleek and classy, but not overly ornate. And I've heard nothing but good things about Cross's customer service.

OOOOOOPPPSSSS!!!!

But this site is NEAT! B) B) Any recommendations as far as trustable?

He's got a bunch, a BUNCH of very nice 51's!

Any suggestions before I buy?

Why the 'ooooopppssss'? I merely stated a counterfactual. There exists a ChickenGod, and that ChickenGod buys Pen1792 and HeadphonesG60, then there is a happy ChickenGod.

∃c : ([bc,pen1792]∩[bc,G60])⊃Hc

See? This was not actually a recommendation as such. Not a single statement of recommendation in there. Therefore I felt no pressure to state the usual disclaimers that I'm not Mr. McConnell, nor affiliated with him in any way. I just think his website is amazing, and I lust after his pens on a regular basis.

:bonk: Starting the semester, too much logic on the brain. :bonk:

I never saw that post about that website... I'll be checking that out... So the Cross Century II is a good pen? Thats great news! And those Wet Inc. Pens are already cleaned and everything right?? $90-$100 is on the more expensive side for me...

I'll also check out the Pelikan 200/250

Thanks!!

EDIT: I checked out the Pelikan 250 and they look really nice... I still have a hard time deciding on nib size.... I'm stuck with choosing either the fine or medium size nib... I use 0.7mm lead with mechanical pencils... Does that help?

Hehe, that is the Parker "51" Aeromatic with a Lustraroy cap? I might get a Parker "51" after all the good reviews on here :).

Whoa now I'm going to have to stand up for the opposition :ltcapd: :ltcapd:

The 51 is the best durn pen that was ever manufactured to some people :D

and to others it's something that writes like a rollerball and is visually dull.

By all means get one but it isn't the pen for everyone.

If there was one pen for everyone then we'd have a much duller hobby. :ltcapd:

I am still confused what to choose.. I think the Parker "51" is out of the question now... What are some good pens in this price range? Maybe this won't be my ONLY pen :D.

Heh.

Get the Pelikan M200. You'll love it.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

While I like the look of that Cross and Amazon has it at a good price, I haven't used it. Someday I'd like to go to the nearby pen shop and see what one of those write like. However, from personal experience I can easily back the Pelikan M200, which I have absolutely fallen in love with... The steel-nibbed Parker Sonnet models are also available for under $90. As a first go, I'd go with the Pelikan. It's a super writer.

If we're backing the M200, well, gee, I have 13 of them that travel with Barbara and me to every show we attend; they're fitted with 13 different nibs for people to play with. My M200s have performed in this capacity for about 4 years now, and they're like the Energizer Bunny and a Timex watch rolled into one. (None of them has ever failed to function.) But they're better looking than either the rabbit or the timepiece.

Okay then! I'll get the Pelikan M200. The look kinda turns me off :P, but I guess that's how it's going to be! The Pelikan is a self-filler right?? :)
