I like the boxes. They bring the pens to me intact. A few I keep, if I think I am likely to sell the pen. Forty years ago I threw away every bit of packaging that came with pens. Now I save the boxes. My heirs will thus have more to do discarding them. I think the high prices of pens are a ripoff anyway, so let the companies spend something on packaging. They are going to rip you off anyway, so why not let them spend some profit on packaging that gives them a big idea of themselves and makes a lot of people think they are profligately wasteful.

I can't comment on celluloid pens, but as for pen boxes, I generally like them. I've kept all the ones I had, because when I stop using a pen, I do typically store it back in its original box. A few of my inexpensive Jihaos had no packaging at all or only a plastic pouch, and my Pilot Plumix came in a plastic bubble on cardboard. That might keep the cost down, but it removes the obvious storage option. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with these pens if I don't use them regularly and want to put them away somewhere.

The fancy boxes I have are nice, but I see how they could raise the overall cost of the pen. I don't know how much, but I'm guessing it's not a huge portion of the pen's cost. If we're talking about less-packaging options though, I think I'd prefer something like the basic cardboard box/sleeve/tube my Pelikan Pharo came in over some other options. I prefer having something decent to put my pen back into, especially since I haven't gotten to the point of really wanting or needing a display case for my pens, and a simple box is better than plastic pouches or the like, IMO.

The new pens from Nussbaum (isellpens.com) come with a leather pen slip instead of a box. Brilliant idea, IMHO.

Oh, this sounds just GREAT. Love that idea.

As far as boxes, I love the idea of using them for storage of small things relating to pens and other things I like but I never actually get around to actually doing that. I guess it is more of a fantasy of a future time where organization and neatness rule.

In therm os odors, I am lucky because I have a very poor sense of smell. I get the feeling that this might not be a bad thing as my wife tells me that many things do not small all that great.
