All the boxes are amazing, but the one that makes me smile most is the treasure box for school - the kids will love that! Is it used for little treats the children earn, or is it part of some activity by itself?

Thanks scrivelry no treats I am afraid it is part of a structured activity I am not sure what the activity is my wife did the creative stuff I just stained it and made the interior.

her next design is a lot more complex and involves multi coloured veneer in small pieces harlequin style.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is my new concept I think I will call it a desk box well until I come up with something better,

It looks like it will hold 14 large pens.

It needs a lid which will be edged in walnut with maybe a maple veneer then I need to think about the inside I like the idea of embossing logos or names inside the lid but as this box does not have an owner as yet I am trying to think of something for the inside of the lid.

ideas anyone.

Thanks for looking

Hey, I am loving the next box, I also think the light chillian laurel. It is very pretty. For the inner I am wondering about brands of the pens to be stored in it. Would you fit in an embosed brand for each of the 14? It could even be asperational for the eventual owner :)

Thanks Luma :)

Fiona I don't know if I could fit 14 logos into the inside of the lid but it is an interesting idea.

I might have a wander into the leather supplier tomorrow and see if I can get some suede for the interior I am trying to keep the price of this box to around £50.

What colour do you think would suit.

Thanks for the help

Hmmm.... deep burgundy or almost wine-looking color? Perhaps a nice olive green? Just my 2 cents worth :D

As for the joints, have you tried scuff sanding them? If I remember correctly, you take some of the existing sawdust from the veneer and with a tiny bit of glue fill in the joints. afterwards it can be sanded down. It been a while since I did any woodworking though so others might have a different opinion ;)

Thanks for the colour ideas I am a little more confused now I think the best plan will be to finish the box without interior and then put it in the classifieds and see if there is any interest.

The joints in the veneer are still visible but to be honest I like it that way it looks natural

I have made a walnut frame and the veneered panel will sit inside that frame at the moment I am planning on adding a small inlay piece around the edge of the two pieces like this one I have ordered a selection.

The post arrived this morning with a tube of mixed inlays so I selected a suitable pair and started cutting I want the veneer to be flush with the inlay so I need to remove the edge of the veneer.

I have cut all of the inlay and laid it out the clamps are holding the frame to the panel and by pushing the inlay in place I can mark where I need to cut the veneer.

I have purchased an inlay saw for this type of project it is designed to cut veneer and inlay

I have cut the edges of the veneer to allow the inlay to lay flush to the veneer this is not for the faint of heart. especially after the glue had set.

The inlay has been set into the edge of the veneer

I am now waiting for the inlay to dry before working out how I am going to attach the outer frame to the veneered panel.

I have not had a lot of time today but I have cut the dowels for the other side and completed the inserts.

I am looking at finishing the lid next.

I think I will list this box in the classifieds and let the buyer decide on the interior colour.

I have finished the top and the bottom and think the hinges are sorted I am going to either put in some screws or dowels in the sides to make sure there is no movement.

That is looking lovely Michael. If it was for me (but sadly it will not be this time), I would be very tempted by a grey also. My first thought was dove grey would look lovely, and since that thought I have mentaly moved darker, but still in the grey tones.

So I was thinking more about the embossing, and I began to think of wavy lines to show up the tones in the suede. Then I had another look at the box, and wondered if you could put in a tree motife in the lid?

I just love the box and hope that the new owner loves it.
