Ok so I acquired an auger bit of the correct size I went with 20mm as I may cover this wood with suede.

I have not cleaned the holes yet.

I am starting to think that I might stain and French polish this piece of plywood it is veneered in oak I may try out the ebonising process.

The alternatives would be suede or felt the inner base will be felt then the plywood panel will act as a false floor the upper parts will be lined in suede as will the inside of the lid.

if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them

Thanks

Michael

I have fitted a piece of felt into the base and smoothed off the holes I have also cut the card for the upper section,

I have wrapped this in suede, Nothing is fixed in place yet.

I will wait until I have decided what to do with the outside.

I did not want to put suede on the ink holder in case of spillage.

I have been reading about ebonising oak with white vinegar and wire wool.

My first attempt looked like this a little too grey

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3714/9479637891_557fe0a67a_z.jpg
IMG_4369_1 by my0771, on Flickr

The veneer sample looked like this inky blue black it would have gone darker with more coats.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5506/9486135834_f98abc4dfd_z.jpg
IMG_4395_1 by my0771, on Flickr

Both after 1 coat of the solution it was clear that even if I could get the veneered ply to go darker I would still have to do something about the inside of the holes.

So I opted for the ebony stain

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5518/9479652371_e01176a35d_z.jpg
IMG_4379_1 by my0771, on Flickr

I also decided to stain the upper parts of the box that were not being wrapped in suede again with the ebony

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3784/9479649541_b9c9c3b5a1_z.jpg
IMG_4377_1 by my0771, on Flickr

So at this point I had green felt inside the base with the lower inside plain wood upper inside stained ebony and suede etc.

It just looked wrong

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7291/9483334823_3f9cc737d2_z.jpg
IMG_4393 by my0771, on Flickr

Out goes the green felt to be replaced with black felt the lower inside sections have been stained ebony.

Next I need to decide on the top and sides I am thinking of red oak and I have a small piece of Brazilian walnut the same as the first project in this thread alc3261s box.

Thanks

Michael

This box has taken me longer than I expected veneering the steps was more difficult than I thought

You might notice there is a difference in colour between the top and bottom pieces this is because the top has been sanded the bottom has not

I have made the inner dividers for the upper section of the jewellery box today I have also cut the card for the backing for the suede liner.

This is the top

The inner edges of this box are black so after rubbing them down I have stained them with ebony wood stain,

I still have more sanding to do before applying the finish.

My wife has chosen cognac coloured suede for this box and it has arrived.

Finicky is a good word it was very, difficult to get the veneer to stick it is even harder to sand it.

I am really looking forward to doing the interior of this box it is my first jewellery box but might not be my last.

I am also experimenting with my ink box as I could not decide which veneer to use I decided to stain the whole box ebony.

I guess I am trying to show that everyone could make a box like this for very little money

Thanks

Well, you have inspired me to at least try with the restoration.

My problem with posting pictures has to do with the software in my computer - I will probably get that sorted in a few weeks, but in the meantime I can say I have not given up searching out candidates. The most recent one is a wood box with a lithograph on top, and the litho is in imperfect but not trashed condition and I like it, so I will be trying to see if that can be kept somehow. I think I have to call the North East Center for Document Conservation (or whatever order they've got the words in) to ask their advice.

I did find out online the other day that hide glue is the same thing as unflavored gelatin - now THAT was a revelation! Somehow woodwork with jello seems far less intimidating that woodwork with a mystery substance. (Yes, I am odd this way, but my mother loves me anyway! :lticaptd: )

Hi Scriverly

I take the pictures from my camera to my pictures folder in windows and from there upload them to flickr (a hosting site) where the pictures stay I then post a link on here to the picture on the flickr site.

My that does sound complex :)

I am really pleased that you have decided to have a go yourself.

You will have to sort the pictures out so we can share in your success.

Having just finished a writing slope to be donated to the dog rescue where our three Springer Spaniels came from (Diesel is my avatar)

I do have another big project which I will be starting next week,

I have joined the group ink purchase organised by Fionafish and wanted to find a way to say thank you to Fiona for the work she was doing on our behalf.

I offered to make Fiona a box like mine but as she has 100s of samples it was not going to work out then I remembered this

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5441/9486574815_a5c58f4a6b_z.jpg
IMG_4399_1 by my0771, on Flickr

It is a former cutlery box that I bought earlier in the year my daughter work out the maths for me it will hold over 200 sample bottles.

As the project has turned into something larger Fiona has insisted on paying for the materials.

The colour will change slightly as it is going to have burr walnut on the top the sides / feet will be ebony and the inside will be the finest nappa suede in turquoise.

The inside of the box will be split into three compartments to stop the ink moving around too much.

More pictures will follow

My ink sample box was going to be ebony, The ebony stain took forever to dry I kept looking at it and thinking it is very plain.

I looked in my scrap veneer box and found some birds eye maple pieces.

I trimmed them up and glued them to the centre of the lid I touched the ebony stain with the hot iron in places transferring stain onto the maple :wallbash:

I had bought some inlay last week and thought this would be an ideal time to try it out.

Once the inlay is fixed I will find something else to go around the outside.

For want of something better to go around the outside I joined some more pieces of maple together and added them around the outside.

Plenty of masking tape in use here

Fiona asked for her box to have the top veneered in walnut and therefore I needed to change the colour of the rest of the box to match as close as I could.

I have added a little ebony stain to the sides which also act as feet.

Fiona s ink box now has an interior these are the final dry fit pictures.

The first picture gives a better idea of the actual colour of this suede it looks blue in some pictures but is definitely turquoise.

IMG_4545 by my0771, on Flickr

The interior has been made with card which is then wrapped in suede.

I have made two dividers these will be an option they will be a tight fit and flexible enough to be moved if required.

I cant fit them until the interior is fitted and dry, The interior cant be fitted until the exterior is finished which will hopefully happen this weekend.

Thanks for looking
