I have had a little time to think about this project and it is going to be based around a rymans pencil box

I have a couple of projects to finish first and as there is no customer if anyone has any ideas for the interior I would love to hear them.

I have some really bright blue and green leather but I really like suede as well.

Thanks for looking

Michael

I was asked if I could make a box to hold ink and pens as well I was pretty sure that I could,

So I decided to make one to see how it would look this is the donor box I have chosen

There are a few things I don't like

Now all I need to do is veneer the outside line the inside with suede make a tray replace the hinges and that will be it.

Thanks for looking

The curved top will be a new challenge however the size of the box does not match the dimensions so I have ordered another.

This box will be going to my wife's school as a treasure box.

thanks

I started making this box into a treasure box yesterday by staining the outside a dark colour as this met my wife's request.

She had this material in mind as it matches the school colours.

The replacement box arrived this morning it is slightly larger than the one pictured above.

My original idea was to veneer the whole box and line the interior with suede.

I am now thinking I may stain the outside veneer the top and line the inside with suede.

I have made a couple of dividers which started of 50mm from the edge and are currently 60mm from the edge of the box.

The diamine sample bottles fit fine on the left the sleeve on the right is 40mmx 40mm x 90mm the rough size of a noodlers bottle.

That leaves 155mm x 175mm x 80mm for pen trays at least three trays holding four or five pens each.

if anyone has any thoughts please let me know

Thanks

Michael

I think if you do another box like this you might experiment even further. I like the dividers very much, but not so much the stacked pen trays. How about opening that part of the front so that the pen trays could be drawers, and you could get to each tray immediately. You could use the cut out material as a front for the trays/drawers, and fit them with little knobs to open the drawers. You would open the top to get at your ink and maybe the top tray of pens, and the bottom and middle would be drawers. It would be best to do this when you don't line the interior, maybe. Just stain everything a nice color.

Just my two cents... right before leaving on vacation. That's when inspiration strikes, it seems.

Watching with great anticipation, as always, Michael! I have way more pen storage than I need - thanks in part to the lovely box you repurposed for me - but I am running out of ink storage space so I look forward to seeing your project unfold. It is sure to give me good ideas for when I attempt my own ink storage project. (I'm also running out of shelf space in which to store more storage boxes, lol, but that is a whole separate problem.)

I like your idea mhguda - drawers for pens instead of trays - but I wonder if you wouldn't need to make such a pen/ink box from scratch? I am not a woodworker, but, just guessing, I think it would be difficult to modify a box like the one Michael is working on in order to install drawers. You would have to disassemble the box, wouldn't you, at least to remove the front piece, and it is finger jointed - and quite possibly glued together. Well, something I wouldn't tackle, but, obviously, I am not Michael!

I am sure that if Michael is intrigued by this idea he will be able to figure out if it is doable, get himself another box, and will be showing us another one of his wonderful projects before too long. :)

I really like the chest design of this box. You are very talented. I also like the birch coloured wood. Can't wait to see what it will look like when it's finished.

Thanks Kate

I don't know about talented but I do have lots of time at the moment.

The top of the lid is indeed birch plywood well spotted.

Do you think it would be better in light veneer rather than dark?

I will need to order more suede for the interior as I don't have a piece large enough which is a shame as I wanted to use suede I had to keep the cost of the box as low as possible.

I think the box will hold up to 8 large ink bottles and up to 12 large pens.

Thanks

Michael

Whilst waiting for inspiration and glue drying.

I went hunting through my veneer box and remembered that I had this Chilean laurel veneer for my wife's jewellery box conversion.

It is a four way book match which I have never done before

I spent a couple of hours sorting the book match out and trimming when I was happy I applied masking tape to the joints

My veneering iron tripped the circuit breaker so I had to use the family clothes iron to fix this veneer.

As you can see below it did not work you might need to look closely to see the gaps.

I am trying to find away to remove it I have asked on a workshop forum for advice

thanks for looking

Wow that was quick

I am making this box for myself to hold the samples from a group ink purchase that fionafish is organising.

I made the template to fit halfway down the box to stop the bottles from falling over and to keep them organised.

Now all I need to do is cut 30 holes in the wood greater than the 15 mm diameter of the bottles the lids are wider so that is why the holes are well spaced out.

This will be a premade box similar to the ones shown above it will be veneered and lined in suede.

Thanks for looking

This is my first attempt at cutting the holes I used a spade bit which is a flat drill bit used for wood it is normally used for thicker wood but I thought I would give it a go.

I am not happy with the result so I am looking for another hole cutter (another piece for the scrap bin)
