How Many Chinese Fountain Pen 's Brand You Know ?

Here is an article (in Simplified Chinese) on the history of the pen industry in Guangzhou:

http://210.76.65.23/books/100005/192.html

Youth Pens still has an active website but it has not been updated for nearly ten years, it might be worth a phone call to get sitrep:

http://www.youthpen.com/cn/home.htm

I understand that the firm, along with Pearl River, were acquired by a firm called "Guangzhou Golden Arrow Office Equipment Factory", or something along that line. The firm does not seem to have its own website, but it would be interesting to do a bit of detective work.

Duke is quite well-known and respected internationally, but for me I am primarily interested in pens from the classic era. I have no idea if the local stationers still have classic Youth pens in stock, but it would certainly be good fun hunting them down.

For your indulgence here is a new-in-box Youth 405...

It is obvious that the Chinese industries, as a whole, transitioned from planned economy to market-led economy, in the last couple of decades. This seachange means that many of the companies active in the earlier era folded for ceasing to be competitive in the new climate, and at the same time new companies came into being, and some early companies managed to reinvent themselves to remain successful.

Being interested in industrial history, I feel that it is a pity that enthusiasts within China have little interest in discovering their own. Certainly there are some online articles on pen history here and there, but I also found that there were very far from scholarly pieces. It is also possible that the company archives containing all the information are always in danger of getting destroyed too, so it would be a most lamentable thing indeed. In case you are wondering, this is one of the articles I wrote on the subject earlier...

I have known the Youth brand pens from way back; I lived in Hong Kong as a small child, and Youth was one of the most affordable pens there at the time. But of course, these days I would have to rely on Taobao for acquisition. The 405 is currently the only one in my collection, but it would be interesting to see if I can find more - at sensible prices of course!

No, I am not going to list my pens here.

I'll dig it out later, it's a neat combo, one end is a ballpoint and the other is a 'real pen' (fountain pen) :P

I recently bought a Luoshi #647. It's a very slim pen which reduces the weight as it is all metal.

Surprised and delighted to find its F nib is actually a stub. Having wonderful fun with it!

The Duke pen I bought is the heaviest pen I've ever encountered - and I don't mind a bit of weight in a pen. It doesn't appear to have a model number but is listed in eb*y as "small green tiles" or something similar. It is a really attractive olive grey with small indented squares (tiles) on the barrel and cap. But it weights 58 grams. That's very heavy for a pen. Writes well.

I knew LUOSHI,but not very much people know this brand .and it's sell almost all don't have unique box for packing .Right ?

However ,DUKE all sell it with the gift box .But ,i thought more buy the pen from ebay would not chose "pen with box" ,because international shipping freight is really too expensive .

I can't search the DUKE PEN which you told on ebay ,maybe you can upload the picture here ,then i can see .

So i thought you would be more prefer to using the pen which not a heavy pen ,right ?

As for me ,i love the DUKE Art No .8 ,Complete Esteem (but i think this model is too heavy to you),nice nib ,elegant style ,i love it .

Also i had another one ,this one is called DUKE No .89B Dream-2.The Nib with the gold plated ,writing well ,light weight and slim .

Now i wanna share the pictures with you .

The red one is Art No .8 ,Complete Esteem, and another one is DUKE No .89B Dream-2.

Vivi, I've seen pics of the Esteem on ebay in red, but the one you have in your pics above looks more like a burgundy or maroon color. Does it come in both colors, or is it just different lighting that makes yours look darker?

Possibly it's the only way for most people to acquire Chinese pens....... I am trying to rectify that over here in the U.K.

Confused ?...You will be !

I have never been able to buy any Chinese pens in the shops here in the UK, and have only bought from E-Bay. I am told better prices are available on Taobao, but I do not speak or read either Mandarin or Cantonese, and I am not willing to trust automatic translation enough. So I don't use Taobao.

Richard

Yup, availability is my guess as well. I've never seen any Chinese pens for sale anywhere else here, except maybe a random Hero or Jinhao. But even those are really rare to come across.

Hey,Richard ,

Yeah ,TaoBao is really very popular in the China ,cos people can select the goods at best price .The most surprised to me was that sometimes goods there near factory price .such as DUKE PEN,many seller in TaoBao,and some price really near factory price .Many sellers would like to buy and sell at low prices, make small profits but quick turnover.

However,i don't like shopping in TaoBao,even i can speak Mandarin or Cantonese, and it's really very cheap .Because maybe you can buy some goods at low price, but can't enjoy the return service or after sale service if were something wrong with the goods .

In one minute you can change your attitude and in that minute you can change your entire day.
