Inside at last!

Hi everyone,

instead of just lurking around I decided to introduce myself to the forum. I'm a student from Germany. I've been writing with fountain pens since they were introduced in primary school. That's quite unusual in my opinion, because most pupils seem to switch to ball-points and other writing instruments as soon as possible. I don't see many students who use a fountain pen. Although I currently don't have the money to buy expensive pens, I have built a small collection which consists mainly of Lamy pens (4 Safaris and 3 Logos). I'm very interested in fountain pens and handwriting stuff. My everyday pen during the last weeks was a Lamy Vista with brown ink. I'm also using a Lamy Flame frequently, which is the limited orange version of the Safari from summer 2004. The Lamy Blue & Red from 2006 and the Lamy Logo Black are part of my collection, too. And I've recently purchased a Waterman Kultur, because the nib is recommended frequently. Some of my Lamy nibs don't write as good as I want them to, that's why I'm also checking out other brands.

Some fountain pens I'm dreaming of are the Lamy Accent Brillant and the Pelikan M 620 Shanghai.

The pens on the photo are currently empty because I'm awaiting new ink. :)

I'm writing some kind of diary to use my pens regularly. I write approximately eighty pages per year. Some years ago I taught myself the old German handwriting which was used in German schools until the 1920s. Today I use it for all private notes and even for some letters - my two sisters can read that script, too. I have a lot of fun writing it and it's useful for reading old handwritten documents like postcards.

I found already loads of useful information on this site. Thank you.

Regards

Hans-Peter

Welcome, Hans-Peter! There's nothing wrong with having a collection of inexpensive pens. One common theme you'll find throughout FPN is that expensive pens do not necessarily write better than inexpensive pens.

You seem to have a good collection of inexpensive pens that write well and make you happy. There's no reason to change that unless your tastes or finances change such that you're enticed into some of the more expensive models. (That's where I am right now, but I still have a taste for inexpensive pens that write well.)

Enjoy spending entirely too much time participating in the FPN community. It's a blast! :)

Welcome to FPN, Hans-Peter.

We are a family of Safari owners. My wife, Anna, has a Vista (F) as her daily pen; our daughter, a red Safari (MK); me, a black Safari (1.1mm italic). When our son is old enough (maybe a year or so) he will receive a blue one :).

Is that Sütterlinschrift I see? You make it look so beautiful! How long did it take for you to learn how to read and write it?

Oh, and welcome! lol

Welcome to FPN. You've got the start of a nice collection. Before you know it you'll have more pens.

Welcome, Hans-Peter. I also have found much useful information here. Brown is one of my favorite ink colors, and I very much like your script. Concerning pens, you might enjoy a Parker Frontier or Sheaffer Prelude, if you are able; I think both of these pens are fine writers.

Hi again,

thanks for the kind words!

Is that Sütterlinschrift I see?

Nearly. :) Sütterlin is a more roundish variant that was taught in German schools from 1920 to 1950 (approximately). But the letters look similar.

I started playing around with the German letters in primary school already (my mother owned an exercise sheet), but I forgot about it after a few months. I then came back to the script from time to time, and when I decided to use it as my everyday script for private notes (in 2002) I noticed I could still write it without looking up the letters. Reading was quite difficult at the beginning (it's really funny when you can write something, but not read it), but when I started writing almost everything with that script (even shopping lists), it went better and better.

Wie geht's?

Mir geht's gut, danke! :)

Thanks for the tips, Bradley. The Frontier is already on my list. :D

Oh, and I just bought a Pelikan Future in black.

I have two of these Kultur pens, one purple and one red. They are fantastic writers for me--even better since they are so inexpensive! That Lamy is terrific also; we are so lucky that paying more doesn't necessary get a better writer.

Anyway, welcome from Texas! What are you studying?

Aloha from far away. My coordinates are off to the left. Actually, that's a few hundred yards away from where I live. I've been to your latitude only a few times in my life and it was always much colder than I'm used to.

I love my Vista and Al-Star too -- great pens.

Again, welcome!

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

What are you studying?

I'm studying horticulture (if that's the right translation of Gartenbau).

What a nice place! But too hot for me. :D

Congrats on the new pens--lovely script you've got there. I have a load of Safaris and Lamy 2000s, and love them for the uses I put them to. See you around the boards, and welcome!
