Pen Storage - Repurposed Cigar Box

Thanks so much for the info, Michael. That's just what I needed to know. I'm not sure I understand what you said about the dowels, but I was thinking of just using the moulding by itself without dowels placed on top.

Clever stuff here and original thinking.

I don't need a box for my pens, I need a storage system for all of my bottles of ink!

That is funny Joe I have just finished an ink sample storage box for fionafish who recently organised a group ink buy you can see it here

Each member who bought a share got 30 sample bottles so I am in the process of making a box to hold my 30 sample bottles it is not finished yet.

I really like your ink sample vial box, Michael. I don't imagine the original box was a cigar box....was it? I can see using several boxes for this, though, and dividing the samples up according to color. Another great use for some of the lovely cigar boxes available out there.

I had 3 of these made for ink vial storage:

I went to a local woodshop planning to get some nice hardwood so that I could make my own, but the price they offered me for both buying the wood and having them make the trays for me using their fancy computerized drill press was too good to pass up.... Each tray holds 30 vials and they are nice looking and sturdy, but, I have to keep the samples on a lower shelf in a corner to protect the ink from light. Having a box instead that has a lid on it, though...... :headsmack: A much better solution. Thank you for yet another fun project idea!

You have a very nice son, mbrandt, and now have a nice storage box for your pens, too.

I was unable to find a definitive answer as to whether or not modern ebonite is as sensitive to light as vintage ebonite/hard rubber is - exposure to sunlight and even some indoor lighting can cause the rubber on vintage HR pens to fade - but decided it was better to be safe than sorry. I repurposed a small cigar box with a sliding lid for my Noodler's Konrad Ebonite Flex pen. This way, I am able to have the pen in rotation and leave it on my desk, but still keep it protected from light while it is not in use. I hope to get a vintage hard rubber pen at some point in the future, and perhaps a Ranga Ebonite pen, so now have room for them as well!

For this box I used tan micro-suede cloth to line the sides, wooden molding (instead of dowels) glued to a birch plywood base for the pen cradles themselves, and dark green pigskin suede to cover the pen cradles. (Sorry about the glare in the photos - it was a sunny day and things were a bit shiny! The sun, my little "point and shoot" camera and my photographic skills also conspired so that you cannot see the true color of the suede on the pen cradles - it really is a nice dark green color....)

Thank you for your comments. I love the "Bella Dama" pictured on the lid as well; when I saw the box for sale on eBay, I knew it was the one I was looking for! And it fits perfectly next to the repurposed pipe rack and flower frog that I use on my desk for my other "in rotation" pens. :)
