@Tracy, really nice work there! Like others mentioned I really feel a sense of depth in it, makes me wonder what is behind that door...

@candidvn -- I always enjoy your drawings. I find them pleasant, and, calming to look at. It's combination of drawing style and color choices that just works well. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you welty for your comment. Yesterday I tried the F nib of Pilot. Its fine but i think i need a flexible nib to control the shade. I like the Pelikan with flexible nib that Tracy drawed the barn door. Have to looking for the same one.

Thanks so much for your compliment, Jeff! I guess it's the result of the inspirations and advices from all of you.

candidvn, I like the spontaneous style and color of your drawings, hope I can do some water color painting too someday. Do you self learn it? The Pelikan 140 is really a great pen to write and draw with, hope you will find one soon.

Candidvn, I enjoy all of the sketches that you post here, however this flower study is especially lovely. So delicate!

In Hanoi, where I live, April is the season of fleur de lys. Fleur de lys is the subject of our artists. I'm no way an artist but I feel in love with this kind of flower.

The photo of fleur de lys I took last year.

  • 2 weeks later...

In Hanoi, where I live,.....

To heck with the sketch.

I know ppl that would kill for that camera. That aside, the picture of the lone fisherman on the hazy deserted lake is one of the best pics I've ever seen. Have fun with yer pen, but photography is yer true palette. Go with it. ;)

Glad I found this topic!

I've been interested in pen/ink drawing too, but right now I'm going through this book: Drawing for the Absolute Beginner, http://www.amazon.com/Drawing-Absolute-Beginner-Clear-Successful/dp/1581807899

I've also bought the books by Frank Lohan (Pen and Ink Sketching, Pen and Ink drawing) but to draw freehand and by observation I figured I need to understand the basics of drawing first (perspective, proportion etc).

Another interesting book I picked up at the library, Drawing on the right side of the brain, http://www.amazon.com/Drawing-Right-Side-Brain-Definitive/dp/1585429201/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1397540858&sr=1-1&keywords=drawing+right+side+brain

Very surprising, and amazing how well the techniques work!

I'll highly recommend these books to anyone who's learning drawing for leisure, or hasn't gone through any training whatsoever.

In a world where there are no eyes the sun would not be light, and in a world where there were no soft skins rocks would not be hard, nor in a world where there were no muscles would they be heavy. Existence is relationship and you're smack in the middle of it.

EDIT: Oops, didn't realize this thread was specifically for the Lohan book and that there's a separate pen art thread.
