Terrific job, Holly. I really like the solution used to hide the odd sized centers of the old pulls. And the new ones? Great choice.

Glad that you guys like my storage chest. :D

Very cool that you are going to make your own, tandaina; I hope you will share some photos of it when you are done. I have seen photos of the box your are modifying (in Michael's Writing Slope thread,) Shangas, and I think it is turning out very nicely.

Is this chest likely to be moved around much? You don't want things rattling and falling loose. I speak from experience.

No, this chest is not very portable; portability was not a consideration when I modified the box so I did not include any method to secure the pens. This storage chest will remain on a shelf in my computer room where the pens can avoid motion sickness. :P

When I take pens to a pen posse or something of that nature, I have a very nice cigar box that John H. (BamaPens) modified and designed for me to carry my pens to the meetings. John has photos and a description of my carrying case posted on his blog; please scroll to the bottom of this page: Fourteen Pen Carrying Case and Ink Vial Wrap :)

Holly, that looks amazing. You did a great job. I was actually just wondering about you recently and how your boxed turned out.

Great job. I'm doing a similar thing and I saw a few useful ideas. You're not going to charge me royalties I hope.

Holly - nice restoration job!

Not to be picky but those are not dovetail joints, those are called finger joints - because they look like fingers.

Thanks for the great pictures. My favorite is the pull handle. You're right, it does look like a nice fountain pen! love it!

I was so impressed with your creativity, I shared this with my hubby, who is a woodworker. He said to tell you that he's impressed as heck with your use of limited tools and creative work-arounds. He says that he'd have spent weeks trying to make things from scratch and going nuts. :lticaptd:

I may have to start looking for something similar, somehow now that both of us are using fountain pens regularly they seem to be multiplying geometrically.

Thanks so much for sharing, it's so inspiring!

Beautiful box and impressive creativity to personalize it.

Thank you all for your comments. I would not have been able to make the box from scratch, but anyone can do the sort of modifications I did so they can have their own personalized pen storage solution. It really is fun!

@johneone - thank you for the correction. Dovetail joints are cut at an angle and actually lock together while finger joints have no angles so the joint is not as secure - not a problem with the "fake" fronts on my box, but something to consider if you are looking for a really sturdy box. Here are some picturesI found on eBay that illustrate the two types of joints:

I may still try your idea of using flock for the pen trays, Michelle, but I really did enjoy working with leather.... :)

Well done. I am searching for the courage to start something like that.

But where on earth did you get that handle, I LOVE it.
