Just plain WOW!!!!!!! this is really beautiful to look at!

 

I do see that like me, you also struggle with your flourishes - is it the roughness of the paper or the nervousness of the hand :-)

I am talking more of the thin sweeps to the left and then upwards.

 

But really, what well executed writing!

Nice...what color ink is that. Nice writin'...I like the way you just go for it. I sit and ponder and labour, and eek out a little here and there at a snail's pace. I always wanted to be able to "whip" that pen around like you do so effortlessly. Look at that "D" in the word Dude. Now that's what I'm talkin' about.

.....when did you start with calligraphy, and what was it that attracted you to it in the first place?

 

When I was 13 years old, I began German lessons in school and I was immediately knocked out by the beautiful German (Blackletter) script in the text book. I can well remember that I couldn't understand why nobody else

thought that it was anything special! That began my lifelong love affair with letters.

During my conscription in the army (1960-63) I supplemented my meagre income by playing the piano and handwriting anything from envelopes to seating plans and place cards for huge military banquets.

And as for you , Ken, you could never go off topic talking about calligraphy on a calligraphy forum. Especially since it's so interesting too! I love how you got into it. I got into calligraphy the first time because I loved it. This was around the age of 10. When I got back into it at 17 (now) it was because I bought a parker trotter ballpoint pen for $5 for school. I loved it so much and it flew so smoothly over the page that I switched to cursive just to write better with it. Then I found copperplate and was like "wow, I need to do this". So I joined, bought some dip pens and... failed. Miserably. Oh well, I'm learning! Then I got my fountain pen and it's all good. I should get an noodler's ahab sometime, I could use the flex...

Yes, I did do #32, even used food coloring and water (with a toothpick) to make that silly colored background on it.

This is a little off the thread, but I wanted to show off this little teeny Red Ripple I got off the 'bay for 50 bucks! LOL! It is so mint that it's scary...I changed the sac (which the old one resembled wood chips falling out of the barrel when I took off the section). I soaked the section and flushed it good (blowing water through with my mouth). LOL! The things we do...lucky we aren't all poisoned by now. I'm telling you guys, this thing had probably only been inked up once or twice ever. There was hardly anything in there at all...the imprints are so freaky clear. It's truly as new as it was back in the 20's when it was first bought. All the nib settings and everything are original!. Fifty Bucks! Wooooo hoooooooooo!

 

 

 

OK...now back to the "show off your writing" thread...

After being so persnickity about making sure that you have two posts, Musink, it would be rude of me to not post a second one... I love that pen of yours, by the way! Such a steal at $50. If only I could afford such things, I would never eat nor sleep nor drink (or pass classes...) but I would just write all day and night. Perhaps that's why I can't afford them... Destiny preventing me from becoming a recluse?

Nice!!!! I love the flourishes around "away". Wish it were a bit clearer, but I know all too well the problems with cameras. My phone cam is not good either...so I try my little cannon digital cam, and it keeps wanting to fire the flash which washes everything out to white...arrrrrghhhh. I can see it though, it's very cool brother!

So as not to be accused of "lacking", here is yet another quickie writing sample. I've been messing around with this all afternoon, trying to manipulate a flexible nib in the same way as an italic nib. I think with a little practice, this could be a fun and easy little alphabet. I'm kind of making it up as I go.
