Hi all,

I've been lurking in this forum for a while but have been very hesitant to post any of my writing simply because I have a definite lack of confidence in it. However, I finally decided that unless I put it out there for more experienced people to critique, I wasn't going to get any better. A book only gets you so far. I've been "into" fountain pens for a very long time but only got interested in pointed pen calligraphy over the Summer. So, here's an exemplar, have at it. Thanks, Howard

Love it Brian! Reminds me of an old traveling show placard!

Yay! I saw the Lindisfarne gospels last week! In Durham, their natural home (other than Holy Island itself, of course.) Prompted me to buy a new calligraphy set which I haven't quite got round to using yet.

I'll get back to this...

Absolutely my favorite nib for Spencerian. Matter of fact, I've got one loaded in my latest UniqueOblique, which has become my go to holder. (I finally did swap out the flange to stiffen things up a bit and to fine tune the geometry.)

The liberty of the press is indeed essential to the nature of a free state; but this consists in laying no previous restraints upon publications, and not in freedom from censure for criminal matter when published. Every freeman has an undoubted right to lay what sentiments he pleases before the public; to forbid this, is to destroy the freedom of the press; but if he publishes what is improper, mischievous or illegal, he must take the consequence of his own temerity. Thank you Manny! That wasn't a very good work...I was just messin' about. Should have used a nib with wider flex, and the little printing parts bled all over tarnation. LOL!

Man, we gotta catch up...long time no talky, bro!!!!!

Thanks, Howard...yeah, that's kind of what I was going for. I'm glad it gave that impression at least.

That walnut ink sort of makes things look old and craggy. I want to experiment with dying the paper with tea or coffee to make it look really old.

So much to experiment with...so little time... (says the guy who recently retired and has all livelong day to do whatever...) LOL!

I agree, Mickey...the 358 is the one for Spencerian. I have better luck with it than anything that I've tried (which are the Est 357, the Gillott 170, the Gillott 303, the G nibs, the Leon. Principal, the Brause 76 Rose, the Brause 66ef, the Spencerian 1, those Est. 128's that I got from you (my 2nd favorite after the 358, btw), and a few others that I can't remember). For Spencerian, I find that those little 358's are absolute heaven and when I experiment with a different nib, I always want to take it out and go back to the 358. It just feels "right", or as they say in Texas...it just feels "ratt". heh. Just thought I'd throw that in; dunno why. I'm really happy to hear that you are enjoying the bloodwood holder I built for you. Did you swap the flange for a phosphor bronze?

Yup. I had a strip of it already folded up. All I needed to do was figure out what angle to saw it off, (about 80 degrees, this time). Because of my grip (back of my hand nearly level), I don't need as much turn in and I wanted the point a little farther forward.

Playing with the dip pens today. Different nibs, styles of writing - mostly just playing around with my normal handwriting. What do you think? Be gentle - my first post here on fpn. :)

Well that's very cool, Chezcerise. You don't have to worry here; we're all kind souls and would not bash on anyone, and if anyone did develop an attitude, a bunch of us would load them up in a junk wagon and haul them off. LOL! But you have some really cool stuff going there. My favorite of your examples is the Oscar Wilde (the one in black ink). The one in blue ink bled...probably too-thin ink since the other examples didn't bleed. Mine often does that when I use some kind of fountain pen ink in my dip pens. But listen, that's some cool stuff. The Lemony Snicket doodle is way cool! Love it!

Thank you - I'll list them all:

Snicket & Brodsky: Diamine Pumpkin

Nicholson & Wilde ®: Diamine Evergreen

Wilde (L): Herbin Violette Pensee (with a really inflexible steel stub-like nib)

Styron: Diamine Red Dragon

Interesting comment MusinkMan made about that Herbin ink. That's the only one I used that particular nib with as well. Didn't like the results - not sure if it's the ink or the nib, perhaps the ink AND the nib? I also blotted it as there was so much ink on the page.
