Invitation To Show Off Your Stuff...

Hang on thang...you said you wanted to teach them an italic style and a gothic style unless I misunderstood. Chancery would be a good italic, and a simplified form of quadrata formata might make a good Gothic.

Ahh, yes, I didn't get what you meant. I already know how to teach them italic, but it was the gothic that I didn't know what to do. The quadrata formata sounds excellent. I'm going to do the most simplified form of gothic possible, and an incredibly simple version of italic. No cursive, just plain old triangles. I'm looking forward to it!

They are going to love that! It will blow them away when you show them how the broad nib does all the "work" automatically. I envy you, bro.

I'll be sure to post the practice sheets I make as well as typing up the explanation I showed them. I might even create a video or two for you guys. The penmanship would be shoddy though, as I'm nowhere near as good as Ken is... But yeah, I'm looking forward to this.

And if you envy me teaching people, you could always use my curriculum once I make it (or make your own!) and teach it to other people. I'm sure an elementary teacher would love it if you took on a "handwriting" class or something.

Why do you think you are getting worse?

I like your stuff.

I think that when you freestyle you get better results though. I know when I concentrate too much it seems to get worse

You do have artistic talent so why not go with that and as you do the perfecting of your strokes will be coming along and it will improve more and more?

A letter

I don't particularly like heavily shaded script, but I know that it's very popular, and it's quite tricky to write with even swells. I squared-off (retouched) the top and bottom of the straight strokes, later. The rest was handwritten in the usual way.

That's beautiful, Ken. Just amazing...the consistent size of the swelled strokes is something that I'm trying to improve. That and the "squared off" ends of the thick straight strokes. I'm learning that it's just about impossible to keep consistent width strokes with finger movement. I'm learning to "lock my hand in place" (for the most part), and let my forearm perform most of the movement. In that way I seem to have a better "feel" for the amount of pressure applied to the nib. As for squaring off the ends, I've done a little patching, but I'm finding that the re-touching is almost an art unto itself. And I have received my 2nd Century holder, this one set up for a Leonardt Principal. And I do enjoy writing with the Leonardt Principal! More so than the Brause 66EF which was all that I had used previously. A friend of mine gave me an assortment of nibs and I am having so much fun experimenting with the various nibs. Can you tell me which ink is your favorite? I have 3 so far...a black Sumi, Higgins Eternal, and McCafferey's black. So far, nothing beats the Higgins as far as I'm concerned.

As for the heavily shaded strokes, they always look so impressive. But I do know what you mean...the old writings in the Universal Penman were not heavily shaded, and that look is the ultimate imho. At least it's my favorite look. Understated, but so perfectly executed. I continue to look at it every day and have been trying to copy some of it (the simpler stuff, that is). I learn something new everytime I copy a paragraph. Thanks again for recommending it to me, and for everything else that you've helped me with!

I've posted several, varied examples of Blackletter. Can you tell me which one you mean? Do you remember any of the wording or can you describe it?

At the top of this forum, I've posted "Composite of Lettering styles"

There are several Blackletter variations. Is it one of those?

Once I find materials which work for me, I tend to stick with them and I don't experiment much.

Black inks -

For fountain pens, I use Aurora Black or Parker Quink.

For dip nibs, Higgins Eternal or Iron Gall ink

Coloured inks - Diamine or Sheaffer

Sorry, I can't help. When I need guide lines, I make my own by computer using Coreldraw.

A little decorated Blackletter. A great German script for the greatest German composer.
