I think it looks very nice. Straight vertical which looks very nice. Really neat little loopy descenders, and a really "fun" handwriting if you know what I mean? I would guess it's a feminine hand are you a female? I would guess generally happy, and a free spirit... So how did I do?

Oh Oh Oh Oh! Spencerian! And there's the "old writing" look that was discussed earlier in this thread. This looks amazing. That's what I'm talking about! Man, there are some really talented writers on this site. That is beautiful, Michael.

Well, I went and peeked at your profile after I wrote that...I got the female part right! As for the rest, you will have to let me know.

Yes, it's a girly hand. But then .... I am female.

Your description of me is very complementary, too, so I think I will accept it!! Seriously, I would say I have a strong inner compass - and the only time I'm not happy is when I don't follow it. You should try psychoanalysis. :P

I love flourishes (thanks for sharing the Spencerian, it is beautiful!), but in ordinary writing I don't want to take time to make them .... so all the loops I learned in Palmer as a kid get cut out (caps are strictly italic), and "reappear" as extra prominent, strong descenders!

You know, this kind of work was something that would never have occurred to me as a "calligraphy job", but it makes sense. I mean really, who else would you call upon to produce a facsimile of 2k year-old writings. That's a very cool project, but I'll bet it was tedious as well. Did you have to cut/shape the papyrus as well as perform the lettering? That's dang impressive.

I remember it took ages and ages - but I did feel privileged to have been given the job. I'm one of those peculiar individuals who actually get some pleasure out of the tedious! I admit to about six attempts before I was satisfied with it. I pencilled the rough outline then cut out and 'distressed' the edges with an emery board after completion of the lettering.

Apparently the museum staff weren't sure which was which on first, cursory inspection, and that has to be the ultimate accolade!

I've been working quite diligently on my writing.

Oddly enough, in the sample I have here, I did not slant the paper much at all. In fact, areas where I get messy are where I was beginning to slant the paper to what it should be. I've been keeping track of all my positions and messups. Areas where I also go off the straight line are where I slant the paper too.

Also used a slightly lighter touch on my EF Nib Waterman. I have a tendency to hold it clockwise (right-handed writer by the way) and doing so gives a bit of line variation, but it catches a lot because it is heavily worn on that side from my regular printing!

My best handwriting to date, by the way. Teachers didn't like my handwriting so they made me print in school. (Graduated now) So I am just fine tuning my lost skills and applying new techniques! And experimenting with my own writing styles.

Any insight to help a novice? :)

A little something I did today to thank a fellow FPNer. This is only my second attempt at calligraphy, so i know there is loads to learn. Hopefully with some more practice i will be able to get better.

That is beautiful, Sir. How much time did it take you to do this piece? And is this the actual size?

I did the capitals separately with a pointed, flexible nib, but the black text took about 45 minutes.

The actual size is larger - about 1 1/2 times the size on the screen.

Looking at this thread, I keep changing my mind ... is my favorite blackletter, or italic? Every sample is prettier than the last ....

I hear that, Maddy. So many outrageously talented examples on here. I love them all, haven't seen a nice professionally done writing style that I didn't like. The problem is that I can never make up my mind on which one to focus on. I know that it's not a good idea to work on learning several different hands at one time, but I want it all. And I want it now! LOL :roflmho:

That is incredible. Ken, is there no bottom to your "well of styles". How can you keep your chops up on so many different styles without getting "rusty" on some that you don't use that often. It's really amazing and uncanny...the ability to just select a random style and have the ability to execute it flawlessly "at will". There are a lot of really talented proficient calligraphers on this FPN site, but your stuff is so head-and-shoulders above everyone else. What a rare treat to see something like this, and get the inside information on how you did it, what pens you used...etc. Rare treat and a rare privelege.
