Great, well done, I love the little prince. :)

But I don't see the limitations you mentioned ;), this is really good.

Being lefty has some drawbacks... I'm not sure if I can ever manage to like how to write with Copperplate... :X

This is really very nice work. What are you writing your italic with?

Okay, this is not "my stuff" in the spirit in which this thread was started, but it is "my stuff" in the sense that I own it. Truth is, I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it but wanted to share. I recently acquired an old scrap book of original turn of the century writing. It has lots of stuff in it (originals from Zaner, Madarasz, Courtney, etc.) and some of it is worse for wear. I assume that back when this thing was put together, not a whole lot of thought went into preserving it for posterity (at least not long term posterity). Some of it was scotch taped in, some of it was glued (that's a nightmare!), and so forth an so on. I've managed to get it all separated and ensconced in protective covers to ameliorate any further damage. All of that having been said, I've decided to embark on the process of scanning the thing and preserving it digitally. What follows is a scan of a piece by Zaner. As you can see, it's got some serious age issues going on. The version on the right is what I managed to do with some creative Photoshopping (playing with the curves, messing with the balance, all sorts of things I really don't know anything about). Hopefully, the detail is preserved enough through whatever machinations photo bucket puts it through to be visible. This one was done at 300 dpi (I think). I've done some other scans at 1,200 dpi and the files are huge! It's the only way I know to preserve the detail though.

Any suggestions or thoughts on this process (what thread this should actually go in, for instance!) would be appreciated. They seemed to me like they might be something others would be interested in seeing. Let me know. Hopefully, this is a good start.

Okay, this didn't exactly work out. The image has zero detail. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I know there's a size limit on the upload. Is that the likely culprit?

Alright, I tried it a different way. This link goes to a Flickr account I created. Let me know how this works. I put a couple of the other scans on there as well.

Thanks Howard! It was a Brause Bandzug 3mm in this one.

I think that the Madarasz "Kupferman" envelope and letter were the most successful, with nice sharp images. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Ken, I agree. The files at that resolution are really big so I think that's going to be the only way to do it. I'm going on vacation next week but will scan and post more when I get back.

Okay, finally got around to doing some more scanning. Here are 80+ scans from the scrapbook I bought. https://www.flickr.com/photos/124113529@N07/ Hope you enjoy. I haven't finished adding descriptions to all of them, although I'm not sure most of them really need it. The practice pages from Zaner are really interesting, at least to me.

Gunga Galunga, MVarela, Ken Fraser (hours concours), h.farmawi and Algester,

Nice stuff here!

Particularly I'm amazed with Ken work and scan quality.

Here's my try with penmanship.

I was lucky enough to find recently a vintage Esterbrook pen with a 2048 flex nib. It has a very fine line that gives a subtle thickness. I've discovered that putting pressure on the downstrokes actually makes my writing more regular. How does it look to you?

I'm pretty much self taught, but in my experiments with the few inks, holders, papers and nibs I've been able to scrounge up down here in Australia, I've noticed that J. Herbin 1670 Rouge Haematite works beautifully with gum arabic to become an amazing pointed pen ink!

Have a look (I must admit I'm kinda proud of this one, even if it's not amazing calligraphy compared to all that you guys are capable of).

What do you guys think?

It's J. Herbin 1670 Rouge Haematite, with some gum arabic added to make it thicker. The gum also seems to improve the sheen.
