Good Pen For My Golf Bag?

johnmetta

Recommended Posts

The season's starting and I wanted to find a good fountain pen to keep in my golf bag.

Considerations:

- Inexpensive to replace

- not oversized

- I carry a pocket notebook, so inking laminated cards is not a problem

Tthis is only my second season playing, but I'm pretty addicted, I go once a week at least, so sitting inked is not a problem.

Current plan is Pilot Metro, but thought others might have good experiences.

What about a Kaweco Sport? The classic and ICE sports are very inexpensive with a variety of nibs and colors. And the size is perfect for clipping onto a pocket notebook. I throw a Classic with a small Leuchtturm notebook in my purse everyday, and its held up admirably.

A Lamy Safari, In addition to the above,

They are durable. I have a pen I use for work. When I'm in jeans, though, the Lamy is almost always in my pocket-- gardening, working around the house, etc. I even stepped on it once in the dark, when it fell in the grass. If you're willing to buy one sight unseen, I've seen them on-line in the low $20s.

Pencil has reigned supreme on the golf course for the last couple of hundred years for a good reason, you can write in the rain with them, you always have a number in your bag, and you can erase if you make a mistake in writing down your score. They are free.

I don't even remember folks using BP's on the course; much less a FP.

Admittedly, I've only been golfing for one season, but used a Gel pen or felt tip all last season quite successfully to note scores and narrative in my golf journal, as did most people I've been out with. My golf bag even has a pen holder which, while it's believable that the designers know nothing about golf in the real world, came in handy. It's possible, maybe probable, that my experience last year was a fluke. Still, I think I'd rather try for myself, and find the situations that warrant giving up on a pen, than just assume a pencil is The Way. Heck, if I was to make assumptions like that, I'd likely not find myself using fountain pens at all.

I've been using my TWSBI mini to keep score while playing chess. Fantastic for size (not to mention distracting the other player..."is that a pen?")

I would second the Pilot Metro, cheap, and AMAZING value for money. Lamy safari would also be a good but bulkier and more expensive choice.

For those missing the joke, its a Parker Lucky Curve.

Two pens immediately come to mind, the first being the pilot metro because its cheap, the second being the safari because it is also cheap, but has a clip that makes it great for putting away quickly and often. Another option would be to go for the varsity, they are like $3 a piece and you can fill them eye dropper style. Then there is the Vanishing point, which, if money was no option, is probably the best option because then you don't have to worry about a cap.

Any other extremely postable pens would be a good choice, too. The TWSBI mini or even a vintage

Using a fountain pen isn't going to help your golf game; in fact, it might hold up play. Why not just get a mechanical pencil you can keep in your bag? An old Autopoint can be had off of eBay for very little money, and they're pretty rugged. The one caveat with an Autopoint is that the erasers can often leave "marks" such that your playing companions might notice that you've "updated" your score....

Hope this helps, and don't forget the X-out golf balls on the water holes.

Another addicted golfer here-got in 18 between the rains this morning :vbg: .

Until I got my custom pocket pen I carried the Kaweco Sport and occasionally used it to keep score. But, after many rounds learned that for me the pencil is the way to goon the course.

Suggest keeping your playing notes on the card in pencil during the round, then transfer that data to the book you are keeping where you note fairways hit, or misses left or right or way right or way left :gaah: ,greens in regulation, number of putts, yardage played, weather conditions, ball used, clubs used, and last but not least, raw score and handicap score using the FP of your choice.

Best of luck with both!

One of those little Sheaffer cartridge pens. They're cheap on eBay, easy to replace, non-cantankerous, well-nigh indestructible, and usually start even if they haven't been used in a few days. Platinum Preppy might be an idea too, but not very...um... show-off-worthy.

Well I think the lanbitou missile like the one in this review. I just got two of these on ebay for $6.59 free shipping to the states. Mine sure write smooth. I got the black one.

Lanbitou

Do not let old pens lay around in a drawer, get them working and give them to a new fountain pen user.
