Custom Pressed Letterhead Paper

I'm planning on creating my own letterhead by using a press; however much of the thicker paper that I've traditionally used for printmaking isn't very FP friendly (overly textured or absorbent,) and is too heavy for letterhead (not to mention it's pretty darn expensive for that use as well.)

I was wondering if anyone's done this before and if so, what papers have you used or recommend? I'm planning on doing linocut because of ease and cost; however I also want to do some mezzotint if the paper will support the plate's intricacy. (I have a printmaking minor from college; but haven't actually done any printmaking in the last few years - nor do I actually have my own printing press! (I'm in the process of making my own, though, finally :) ))

Hi, AJ!

I do custom letterpress printing and I can say from experience that the Crane Crest 24lb and 28lb papers are exquisite for letterhead. They take a relatively deep letterpress impression (for being so thin, of course), and would work very nicely with linocut and mezzotint plates, they fold neatly without splitting, and they are very fountain pen friendly. Other solid papers are any of the Strathmore writing collection, Classic Crest 24lb in eggshell finish, and Mohawk's Superfine eggshell. I can send you samples of these if you'd like to experiment.

I stock Crane Crest 28lb in pearl white wove, if you'd like a small quantity.

Best,

Meghan
