Pen Wrap

Thanks Holly. It's a Pelikano. I was reluctant at first, but now I'm planning on the third one :headsmack:

To paraphrase an old ad jingle for Lays Potato Chips - "I bet you can't just make one!" This must be the theme for pen wrap makers. You, Craig and Michael have all made at least one pen wrap and are planning to make more. (And I can't even guess how many you have made, Kathryn!)

I just "discovered" this site; it has some wonderful fabric designs: Spoonflower They also have about 28 pages worth of fabric choices based on the alphabet, so if you are looking for fabric with a writing theme...... Cool site, has anyone ever ordered from them? I think this will be my source for fabric if I decide to make a wrap. The fabric would also work for the lining of cigar boxes, etc., repurposed for pen storage, which is something I am working on now.

Holly

Happy to help in any way I can Holly, just shout. That website is precisely what I've been looking for, so many thanks for potentially causing me to spend even more money I don't have...

Glad I could help you and empty your bank account at the same time! :P I am impressed by a lot of the designs offered by Spoonflower and the prices seem reasonable - let us know if you order from them and how the experience was and if the cloth is as nice as it looks - I will enable you, and you can be the guinea pig, sounds fair, doesn't it? lol

By the way, Craig, where did you get the charm or metal bead (??) for the tie wrap? It really looks nice with the cord and the glass/ceramic bead you used and adds a great finishing touch.

Holly

It came from Hobbycraft Holly, as the metal bead securing the cord.

Thanks again Michael, though I've never worked with leather before, I do have a plan as to how I would construct a wrap and am currently developing a template. I'm going to see what options are out there in terms of supply and will let you know as quickly as I can whether I wish to source this material from you. Thanks for the tips, I'm sure they'll come in really handy.

Craig I shave bought from these guys in the past.

Of course, a hobby and crafts store. :headsmack: Thanks, Craig. I will check into some of the local craft stores around here to see what is offered.

I already have a couple of projects going now, or at least in the planning stages, so a pen wrap will probably have to wait, but no harm in starting to gather materials!

Hi Holly I think we need some pictures please.

Craig there is no hurry just let me know when you are ready

All these fantastic wraps are making me want one myself.

Michael

Hi Michael, missed your post earlier today. I am not yet making a pen wrap so no pictures - have to finish my flatware storage box first. (It is time to start planning and making the pen trays/cradles, kind of scary, since I am not sure what I am doing! ) I will post pictures if (when?) I get around to making a pen wrap; just looking into material possibilities right now.

(And if you were talking about my other projects, I'm not quite ready to start a thread about my storage box modifications, either - I am taking pictures as I go along, but want to see how it turns out before I start a thread - it may not turn out exactly the way I had planned, so I may have to revise the title to something like "Look at the mess I made!" :P )

That is really nice and I like that it is lined with suede. How long are the pockets that hold the pen? I have a few pens (like the TWSBI 700) that barely fit in the pen rolls due to their length.

Hi NickedMick, glad you like it.

The pockets are 5 inches long (about 127mm). The pen at the top of the picture above is actually a Whiteboard marker that measures 6 inches long by 3/4 inch diameter. So I reckon that this wrap would accommodate a Vac 700 with ease.

The suede lining is just fantastic. It's kind on the pens as well as being nicely tactile. It also means that the wrap holds its shape well and doesn't crease or crumple.

You can see on this link that Speedy from TWSBI has one too!

I should have added that the maximum length pen that you could fit in the wrap would be 6.5 inches (165mm).

I have started making a wrap for oversize pens not that I have any but I thought I would make it anyway.

My question is how wide would the slots need to be? at the moment they are 25mm suede does give a little it would be easy to make them 50mm by removing some stitching .

It could accomodate pens up to 250mm long depending on the size of the outer piece of leather.

Thanks

Michael

I've allowed 35mm on mine and that seems jut about perfect.

I am really interested in making myself a leather pen wrap but need a little guidance. what kind of leathers are you using for the inner/outer? in terms of tools, are you just using a leather needle? what kind of thread?

I'll be investigating materials this week so will feed back after that, though I'm currently thinking suede and/or pigskin will form elements of my design. I suspect Michael (my63) will be able to give you some advice.

Hi Shallowjam

I must tell you right from the start I am not an expert on leather I have made pen wraps from leather and the lady who has them loves them.

I use two types of leather the outer is clothing grade 0.8mm to 1.5mm in thickness it is sold by the hide or half hide. be careful it can be very expensive. I always try to buy offcuts whole hides can cost £100s where a part hide could cost £25 -£30.

The lining leather is pigskin or glove leather which ever is cheapest the last hide I bought was about £30.

I asked the man in the leather shop for thread and he gave me 50gram Nel 18/3-z glanz not sure what language it is or if it is technical speak if you know what I mean.

Needles are John James saddlers harness needles 002 code L3912 pack of 25.

You can also get a wheeled device with spikes on for marking the holes I prefer masking tape and a pencil some sort of bradawl for making the holes in the leather I use the end od a very sharp pair of scissors.

finally I use Fiebings edge kote to seal the edges of the leather.

I am happy to help you in any way that I can I offered Craig a pair of needles some thread and some leather (blue green or brown) enough to make a wrap for £10 plus postage I will make you the same offer. I dont think I would make a profit at that price but that is not my intention.

Regards

Michael

Okay, I found an old tan suede jacket that I've not worn in many years and was likely to be disposing of, so I've cut it up instead. I've also bought some goatskin leather in a deeper brown as it was very affordable. I'll be making something from them in due course though I'm currently considering a combination of leather and fabric as an option.
