Fp Leaking From Converter Nipple

Hi guys, i have a Aihit FP on loan from my bro who got it as a gift. It uses a standard converter (international?) and it has never leaked before when i used Parker Quink Black.

Yesterday, i decided to switch to Lamy Blue. I noticed when i lay the pen vertically on the desk, it will leak from the converter nipple and out from the screw threads of the body and onto my fingers. I unplug the converter and reseat it properly and still it leaked within 10-15 minutes of resting it on the desk.

Then i cleaned it and put water in the converter to see if it still leaked. So far so good, it did not leak. I will try again with Quink Black and Lamy Blue tonight to see if diff inks make it leak.

I was wondering why this happen, i notice that Quink Black and Water dont splosh around in the converter but my Lamy Blue and Black does in this converter and also Lamy converter. Lamy Turquoise also stays put in the converter unless u tap it with a finger flick, then the air buble will start to move. What is this phenomenon called? Is there a term? Is this a cause of my leak?

Thinking of using back "sticky" ink in my pen and hope they dont leak. (Dont really like Quink as its dry and poor flow). Btw, even tho Lamy Turquoise is "sticky" i feel its a wetter ink than Lamy Black and Blue.

Anyone care to enlighten me? Im just a beginner in FP and been writing and tinkering less than a year.

Different companies use different cartridges and converters, a Lamy, Cross and a few otehr companies will not fit that normal international short or long.

Sheaffer will not fit either.

Cross uses it's very own cartridge, filled with Pelikan ink.

OK, you can try turning the next Lamy cartridge upside down. It should then work. I needed to know that for the Geha cartridge, which is discontinued...some day I'll get a Geha cartridge pen...now that I know that.

It was stated it would work with a Pelikan, so should also work with your pen that accepts standard international and Parker cartridges.

Hi,

I would look at the tip of the converter connector. Many times, converter connector tips can crack if they are removed often. You might want to see if the tip of the converter is cracked since this is a very common cause for leakage.

Just test with Quink Black and there is a leak... guess my converter could have a crack, but ill try a cartridge to make sure its not the feed leaking.

I just noticed that Quink Black moves around freely in the converter now, previously the ink doesnt move freely unless u tap it then it breaks the surface tension and the ink moves towards gravity. Is it because i didnt clean the coverter well enough when they were new?

Hi,

Yes, that can sometimes happen. You really should check and get that converter replaced. This kind of leaking is caused most of the time by the connector on the tip of the converter cracking. I've seen it, especially with people who tend to remove and replace their converter a lot.

yes i tend to remove the converter and fill them rather than stick the whole nib into the bottle. Thats because i want to reduce contamination to the ink in the bottle as little as possible. I do fill the pen thru the nib if i just cleaned it.

This Aihit Converter must be of poor quality as i seldom use this pen though. I have filled it less than 10 times as i normally use my Lamy Safaris.

Anyway, i have put in a J. Herbin Bleu Nuit Cartridge in. So far no leaks when kept horizontally. If no leaks today, then the converter has a crack somewhere below the converter nipple underneath the metal ring.

Also, filling the converter directly is just asking for trouble. It simply encourages building up ink that will cut down the fit at the nipple.

This. I didn't realize this until my Lamy Logo spilled bulletproof black all over my hands. Filling normally otherwise generally prevents this, as already stated. One other thing you probably don't want to do is mess with the converter too much; spinning it in place (not moving the piston) also encourages the same leak.

Calculating.

Hi,

I forgot to mention earlier that the biocides and other things in the ink will kill off any odd bugs that you may have in your ink, so there is little need to worry about contamination. Many people have done this for decades without any appreciable effect due to these chemicals in the ink.

I see, thanks for the tips guys, im really new to this here. Guess ill just fill it normally next time. Now that you guys mention it, before the converter developed the leak, i was plugging the converter in then for good measure, i did push on it a 2nd time. Perhaps i pushed to hard. It wasnt really very hard but maybe it was enough to damange the converter.

Side note: Ive been at war with myself for last few days. The site i order my pens from having a limited quantity sale for Pelikan M800 Black M for $298... Wanted either a M600 or M800 for past year now and when there is a sale, im having such a hard time fighting the poison. Thats a lot of moolah for a Pen (im a bit of miser) but its soo sweet, even though is not the colour i want and im more of a F user.
