Nine bottles of ink from Pendemonium!

Phthalo

Recommended Posts

My long-awaited inks arrived today - nine bottles worth!

- Diamine Umber

- Noodler's Russian Chekhov, Noodler's Russian Dostoyevsky, Noodler's Russian Pushkin

- Noodler's Apache Sunset, Noodler's Golden Brown

- Private Reserve Burgundy Mist

- Rohrer & Klingner Morinda, Rohrer & Klingner Fernambuk

(The colours in the below photo are quite accurate on my screen, but maybe a tad strong. The hardcopy looks slightly subdued in comparison. Cotton swabs on Canon Super White SW-201 Paper.)

Note: More photos posted a few messages down.

http://www.ciar-roisin.net/photos/2007Inks-01.jpg

Diamine Umber

Not at all what I expected. Where is the grey? Just a forest green to me. I may have to add Black Quink to it.

Noodler's Russian Chekhov

Very nice! Take the palest hue from Apache Sunset, tone down the saturation, and you have Chekhov. A soft and pretty golden autumn shade. Minimal variation. Suits a wet nib on super-bright white paper, also good to mix with.

Noodler's Russian Dostoyevsky

Not as I expected. Like a slightly desaturated Turquoise Skrip. I expected a more muted turquoise with stronger grey tones. May add some Black Quick to this one too.

Noodler's Russian Pushkin

Very nice! Unmistakably green with very strong grey undertone. Minimal variation.

Noodler's Apache Sunset

Very nice! Range of variation is incredible - from pale yellow-orange to a very deep red-orange.

Noodler's Golden Brown

Very nice! Excellent variation here too - pale golden brown can co-exist beside a deep golden brown hue with red overtones.

Private Reserve Burgundy Mist

Very nice! Rich and vibrant with cooler purple overtones.

Rohrer & Klingner Morinda

Very nice! Similar to Levenger Fireball, but lacking the zing and orange overtone. Slightly dusty, redder and darker.

Rohrer & Klingner Fernambuk

Very nice! Brighter than Levenger Fireball, complete with the zing but with strong pink-red overtones.

I'm very pleased with all the above-mentioned inks except for Noodler's Dostoyevsky and Diamine Umber.

Also, the Russian inks have a curious characteristic - they dried almost instantly on contact with the paper, putting me in mind of those Japanese poster-paint markers which evaporate on the page before your eyes: in the split-second you see them evaporate; the colour simultaneously fades and lightens.

Sorry the comments are so short and bland - these are my first impressions only. I hope to add further comments and photos after actual use! :)

Thanks for the great review-- your variation rating really helps. B) I may have to get that Apache Sunset. Such a happy, expressive color!

Wonderful review! Wow, that's a lot of ink that you got. Enjoy playing around with all your new colors.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to share this with us. Is it expensive to get ink shipped from over here, and is there any problem with customs/security?

Thanks, Pthalo, for your scan and very helpful comments. Now I've added more inks to my buy list.. <_<

The question is, El Lawrence or Pushkin? El Lawrence or Pushkin? But then, Dostoevsky was on the list (loved Chupie's scans) and now that I've seen the swatch from your bottle, it's off. So maybe I could get both. :eureka: And your Noodler's Golden Brown swatch is the prettiest scan of it I've seen, and Burgundy Mist looks very nice, hmmm...

Love my Apache Sunset (and my orange Pelikano), and it looks like your scan.

the dostoyevsky looks a lot like waterman south sea blue. however, i am intrigued by the pushkin here. it is an unminstakable gray, while handlebar's scans are of a seafoam green, as handlebar himself said.

what to make of this, i wonder?

I have the Dostoevsky and it matches my Core lysium with a finer nib and in my Teal Pelikan go with a medium nib, it matches that very well too. It's no where near blue.

always in the eye of the beholder, isn't it.

To me it's quite grey. But your scan looks bluer than it does to me IRL.

Very nice review and some interesting colors.

I have some more comments and have made some further photos of the ink samples. I have made these on three different types of paper, and have included a couple of 'control' colours. The three papers used are: 80gsm Cream Archival Copy Paper, 140gsm White Drawing/Cartridge Paper and Cheap Spiral Notebook Paper, respectively. Interpret the images as you will. :) I can give people the RAW files if they are that bored… ;)

The first three images are about ~150K each, the fourth is a composite of the all three and is about ~500K.

Comments:

Pushkin is appearing greyer on my photos. If you are thinking of buying this ink, please see JD's review images also. I believe my photos are too grey, and JD's are too green. Imagine something in the middle, and you'll have it. I find Pushkin feathers a fair bit, which is disappointing. Chekhov and Dostoyevsky feather less than Pushkin.

Dostoyevsky is slightly less vivid, and slightly paler than Sheaffer Skrip Turquoise. It is nothing like the Lysiam shade on a Core, which I have right here. It is nothing like chupie's colour sample and that makes me mad. It is blue, blue, blue. Are we seeing batch discrepancies?

Umber is just dark green. It is identical to the Derwent Artist Pencil colour, “Bottle Green 4300”. :(

I'll mail people paper samples if they are interested enough. Bear in mind it will take about two weeks from AU. We need more Dostoyevsky user input too, so if you have it, post a sample and describe the colour yourself. :)

http://www.ciar-roisin.net/photos/2007Inks-03.jpg

Nothing else to report for now. I'm expecting a couple more Pilot 78G's in the mail soon, and I'll ink them up with Dostoyevsky, Golden Brown and Umber, as these are the only inks I haven't got in pens yet.

My favourite would have to be R&K Morinda. It's just a nice, subdued red, and it has a slight bit of that 'aged edge' thing that I love R&K inks for. I got a bit of 100% silicon grease in the order too, and with its help, I've stopped my Sailor Eyedropper from leaking around the point-section - it's now filled with Burgundy Mist and I'm very happy. :)

johnr55: It is expensive to get ink shipped, yes. But with no other place to buy it from, I suck it up and pay the postage. This order was the second largest I have made. The largest was 18 bottles for me and a friend. Postage was around ~$40-$50 for both. I've been buying online for four years and have never had anything picked up by Customs, I think our duty limit is a bit higher than some countries though, it was $300 last time I checked.

Ok, going off to play with all these exciting colours. :)

I hope you do, Hana -- and if you do, be sure and post some scans here! The color variations in Apache Sunset are amazing with a flexy nib, and with your artistry you could make the most of it. :)

Nathan Tardif did explain color discrepancies among batches. It's here: http://www.pendemonium.com/ink_noodler_info.htm it's the last article on the page.

I suppose there is an added excitement to not knowing exactly what shade of a color you are going to get. And then it will be much more fun to post scans, to compare who has the greenest one or the reddest one, and so on and so forth, and then decide to trade. :)

Thank you very much for your kind words!

I just ordered samples of Apache Sunset, Private Reserve Foam Green, J. Herbin Bouquet D'Antan, & Lie de The from Pear Tree Pen.

maryannemoll: Thanks for the link about the batches, granted there is added excitement, but there is also annoyance. :/

Is anyone interested in my Dostoyevsky? :P I'll never use it up in a hundred years. Blue isn't my thing.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?

Hullo! I really like making ink doodles, and I'd like to share a few. Anywhere on the site I can do so? Thanks in advance!

Just checking on a classified section and where we are with that. Many thanks. Bill

@inky1 The software for the classified stopped working with the forum. So no we don't have a sales section anymore at FPN

Hi. Anybody ever heard about a Royal Puck Pen. Very small but good looking.
