A Review Of The Nemosine Singularity Demonstrator Fountain Pen

I am surprised that more people haven't commented on the most obvious design flaws of this otherwise fine pen,(especially at this price) which is that it takes almost no effort to accidentally unscrew the barrel instead of the cap.

And I would say this is absolutely a design flaw, and one that is almost an excusable given the tendency for the plastic on these demonstrators at least to crack without much effort. Which means that you have to screw the barrel on very tightly to make sure that for uncapping you are actually unscrewing the cap and not the barrel. This inherently invites cracking around the threads. And i suspect part of the reason some people find the pen tends to dry out is the tendency, almost unconsciously after some time, to put the cap on with less than solid tightness so that it comes off again, rather than the barrel.

Which is a shame, because I also have the stub nib, it's a beautiful writer, and looks lovely when filled, write smoothly, no complaints there. But it's a frustrating pain in the keister otherwise.

Just add an F at the beginning, and any Art stinks.

Just screw the barrel on tightly and don't monkey-on the cap. I made the mistake of that happening once and it's since never happened again. Alternatively, a platinum preppy spec O-ring will secure the barrel a little more tightly and stop the problem.

I do think it's a future issue to look at, but otherwise, the pen has so much going for it, and Josh over at Nemosine is just one hell of a guy. He almost always throws in something meaningful with your order. I got my first singularity for free with my order of a complete set of his inks (which are awesome with gorgeous colors and great performance BTW) and my second one, he threw in a half dozen cartridges of his own black AND a dozen cartridge block of his neptune blue cartridges. I ordered just a nib from him and he threw in a free nemosine converter.

Can this pen’s stub nib be used with the Ahab or Metropolitan?

ahab, yes. it's a #6 nib, so it'll fit a ton of different pens.. the pilot metro uses a specialty nib shape.

Ahhh y'beat me to it. Do let me add that I'm assuming you are already familiar with the need to heat set your feed in the Ahab, because it can otherwise be very messy although the feed will certainly provide good saturation on for that nice broad stub.

Belatedly, Badge, thanks for the insight on the O ring for the Singularity. While it's currently out of circulation for the time being, I got my daughter one for her birthday, so that will give us a chance to experiment.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the way this pen is designed! You are in trouble if you do not know it you are unscrewing the cap or the body of the pen! If you do not know, you have more problems that a "fountain pen" problem. C. S.

...I'm resisting the temptation to lower myself to the all-too-easy level of "smartass retort."

Suffice it to say, Skinnerbox, you are truly graced with fortunate happenstance, and it is my sincere hope that that same golden sunshine showers you in all your like endeavors.

My Singularity has been a solid acquisition. It is a little thin in girth and if they increased that, it would be a great value. Never had a leak. Has great ink capacity and the flow has never been a problem. The only issue I had was when I replaced the nib with a Jinhao nib. It then became a little wiggly. The Nemosine nibs seem to be a bit more concave in their design and hug the feed unit a bit more than other nibs. Other than that, a good value demonstrator!

Great review! My co-worker has a singularity with the 0.8mm nib and it is a wonderful writer. He did the eye dropper conversion, which is a really cool option to have. Thanks for sharing!

This is one of my favorite pens! I can find nothing wrong with it, and can not think of any way to improve it! ---- If I did not already have too many pens, I would buy another one! C. Skinner

Mine came with cracks in the final on top of the cap and it burps ink when using a converter. I'm also not impressed with the M nib as it comes out of the box. But for the ~$8 I paid for it on closeout I'm not too disappointed, but I also cleaned it out and put it away. I am in no rush it ink it again.

I have three Singularity pens and one Neutrino. On the rare occasion, the nib unit has started to unscrew instead of the cap. But as typed, it is rare. I really like the Singularity a lot. The nib changed easily when I got the Coral version in M nib, and switched it out for a 0.6 stub nib. I like the design of this pen from top to bottom.

The Neutrino has a slimmer profile, and a #5 nib. It is made of metal, and worth trying. Someday I think I’ll buy a Fission in rose gold, though it looks more gold (which is fine).
