Proud to say that my kid is learning cursive writing in 1st grade!

He's so proud of what he's learned so far and he loves that he's learning to write like dad. :D

It's so cool!

I mentioned that to a couple of my kids after school today, and one of my 8th graders showed me her notes and WOW her writing is gorgeous! Makes me a bit jealous actually. :P

Here's my boy's writing.

me too. I don't know if it's in the curriculum or if the teacher just wants to teach it, to get them used to seeing joined up lettering, but I think it's great. :D

My own mother taught me schoolhouse cursive from a text book and a copy book. I would dread many a childhood afternoon when she would make me sit for about two hours at a desk, practicing those shapes. Every time slouch a little, she would tap my back. Everytime my arms would go out of position, she would tap them back into place. But now I can appreciate what she did.

Tonight - instead of writing his sight words and vocab in print, we tried it all in cursive. He learned lower case f and s, and that was the most fun I've had doing homework with him yet this year. :cloud9: HE even had fun! It was great. I've put his writing sheet in his home folder to show his teacher tomorrow.

:D

That is fantastic! I bought the Barchowsky book to teach my kid myself, just in case they decide cursive is obsolete by next year. (He has been getting me to write words in italic for him and imitating them with a little felt-tip chisel marker, so I think he is interested!)

Your little one's looks great!

My school does. :) And I'm really happy about it. I've been helping him with it at home so he gets better and doesn't struggle with it at school.

Does he write with a Newton pen yet? I know you made one not too long ago that was aimed at "the younger set."

Not yet. He's been asking me though. I told him he'd get one when I knew he could take care of it and not leave it where the little brother could stab the floors with it. Once last summer after they were done drawing, I heard a shriek and walked into the living room to find his Reform 1745 standing up on the floor. That nib needed a LOT of work. :P

In Nova Scotia there is a movement to have cursive writing a testable component of schooling.

The other day, CBC Radio and Television had some rather interesting reports about Cursive Writing in Canada, and how the lack of it is affecting students. Here they are:

http://www.cbc.ca/player/Radio/Local+Shows/Alberta/ID/2334028594/ From Alberta, an interesting interview about why cursive writing is essential for a student's developmental abilities.

North Carolina Legislature has just filed a bill to mandate that cursive be required despite our adherence to the Common Core curriculum. An amazing number of people think this is nuts, but a suprising number think it's an excellent idea. See the story here.

Wow, guys and ladies, I am quite astonished at this. Here in the UK cursive writing is pretty standard practise. I've just spoken to my wife about it as she works in our local high school. 99% of students who can write (some are a bit poor at it) do write in a cursive script as normal. They learn this as standard in primary/infant school. At least they do in the Staffordshire area.

It's good to see you good people encouraging your own children in cursive script. It does make writing even more of a pleasure especially when using a fountain pen. All power to your and your children's arms :)
