Pilot Shin - Kai

Great review. I have a bottle of Tsuki-Yo on it's way but I might have to give this shin-kai a go around. Also what is that light blue you use for the headings of each page is that ama-iro? I like the shading of it.

Pilot Blue-Black

That is immensely helpful. Thank you.

I will eventually get both, but am still deciding which to get first. :hmm1: Obviously I like shin kai better, but 350ml bottle for just $5 more is hard to resist. Did I miss anything, Sandy1?

Hi Tony,

You're welcome!

Sometimes the devil is in the details when choosing an ink to purchase, so a bit of [opinionated] hairsplitting when comparing inks can be helpful.

Which to get first?

  • PBlBk is very much an all-rounder, though not particularly exciting; which to me is a good thing for a daily writer ink: It will pitch-up, then go about its business in a journeyman's fashion, giving a sound result from most pens on most papers without distraction.
  • Ps-k is a bit of a chameleon, which is quite sensitive to the pen+paper combo. It seems to invite exploration and fine tuning to get the desired appearance. Much more of a 'personal' ink to me, though I'm waiting to read of the experience of those who've used Ps-k as a daily writer ink.

So if I just want to get on with writing, then its PBlBk, but when I have the time, materials & patience to work with nuances of appearance, then its Ps-k.

Please let us know of your experience with either or both!

Bye,

S1

Hi,

Many thanks for your kind words! :)

IMHO tsuki-yo is an exceptional ink, though may be an acquired taste. I hope it appeals to you too.

The ink used for lines & labels is OMAS Turquoise from a Pilot Penmanship + XF, (mentioned under NB&B / Pens.)

So we also have a mini-sampling of Omas Turquoise. (Perhaps I should ask other Members what inks they'd like to see sampled in such a manner.)

I just got the Tsuki-Yo and I love it. I'm looking for a nice light blue with a little bit of green and I really like that OMAS Turquoise, I'm also looking at the Ama-Iro and Lamy's Turqoise, decisions decisions.

Sandy,

I don't know what your day job is but your description of Shin-Kai as "subtle, understated, a bit of a chameleon" is not only a perfect characterization of the effect of the ink, but also of me (which is why I like this ink in particular.) Thanks for the "reading"!

How is it that I missed this thread?

&,...from Sandy1 too!

Bought a bottle of Shin-kai early last year. I really liked the ink's "subtle" b/b colour & its ability to tame a couple of fire hose nibs, that were set up for IG inks.

Thank you for your usual thoughtful & thorough review.

Hi,

Very thoroughly review.

I have ordered a bottle of shin-kai a few days ago. I am quite curious to amount o shading i can create.

Thanks for the review.
