Pilot Shin - Kai

Thanks for the review. I am new to the discussion boards, but wanted to ask you about your thoughts comparing Shin-Kai to Tsuki-yo. Different tone, different feeling, but in the same general blue-black-grey. You mention that it took some time to warm up to each of these two inks. Now that you've spent time with both, do you favor one over the other?

Hi,

I've posted a Review of tsuki-yo HERE. As I used much the same format for the text and the Written Samples, one can read across those documents to make their own comparison. As ever, if you have specific questions after your own comparison, please feel free to ask.

I still consider shin-kai to be a newcomer, and as it is rather subtle, it may take 1/4 of the bottle for me to really get a handle on the ink. (I am not so easy to impress.)

That said, tsuki-yo took much longer for me come around to what the ink was doing - especially as it is more Green than I'd expected. Member Tokugawa described tsuki-yo as "shibui", which Wiki defines as " . . . a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty." LINK

I hope that shin-kai is also a shibui ink. :)

Yeah I am not a black ink person, but they did a good job with this one, its got some blue and other color movement in it. It really is a classic charcoal deep color with movement. And Shin Kai is a gorgeous deep classic restrained I would call it BB.

Best

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your experience with take-sumi and shin-kai.

I look forward to a Review of take-sumi, and more Reviews of shin-kai.

I've had the same experience with Tsuki-Yo. I remember being really unimpressed and now I think it's glorious.

Great review (again!) Sandy. My bottle of this ink arrived yesterday and I've put it in a Pelikan M205 with an Italic nib - great shading, nice flow and wonderfully understated colour.

Hi,

Thanks for the compliment!

Could you please share with us the paper you're using to get such shading?

Also, have you noticed bleed- show-through on lesser papers?

Please feel free to add images of your samples!

Hi,

You're welcome!

Glad you like this ink. :happyberet:

I used it for a brief letter, using a slightly wet Pelikan Sahara + slightly wet B nib on Rhodia 80gsm. I was tempted to keep writing well into the night . . .

Some photos of this ink in a Pelikan M205 with Italic Nib. Apologies for the photos - I took them with my iPad in poor light as I have left my camera in our holiday house in NZ, D'oh!headsmack.gif

BUT, definitely out of focus!rolleyes.gif

Hi,

Many thanks for sharing all the wonderful samples.

I am very impressed at the shading you are able to generate!

Your samples show a fair amount of deviation across the different papers, which seems to confirm my observation that shin-kai is quite malleable. I hope that does not become a source of exasperation.

Yes Sandy, it is malleable. On some paper it looks stunning and on others quite flat and dull; still experimenting will be fun.

Hi,

Thanks for the confirmation!

From a personal standpoint, I very much enjoy having inks that I can work with to get just the appearance that I have in mind at the moment. But those inks are for occasions when I have the time and patience for such exploration. Of late it seems that I'm using proven combos of pen+paper and inks that run on rails, so the choice of pen & paper is much less fussy involved.

I kept it in a pilot custom 74 with sf nib and it worked beautifully, with some shading etc. Now have it in a Platinum Century with sf nib. great stuff.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your experience with this ink with the different pens - especially the narrow nibs.

I'm thinking of giving it a whirl from a Reform 1745 with a slightly soft steel nib on plain ol' HPJ1124 . . .

Pilot Blue-Black

That is immensely helpful. Thank you.

I will eventually get both, but am still deciding which to get first. :hmm1: Obviously I like shin kai better, but 350ml bottle for just $5 more is hard to resist. Did I miss anything, Sandy1?
