Stub O' The Day

Here is today's stub. It is a Tomahawk grind from Art of Art's Nibs. I understand he is no longer taking on work which is too bad as the little incisions make for a pretty nib. Some flex is added, but not too much as the nib is fairly rigid steel. The nib in on a Faber-Castell e-motion.

Zaddick, Pelman, Nice nib photographs. How did you do them?

Thank you Bobje- i am embarrassed to say that it is with a smart phone. The technology is so good that even someone like me can do an "ok" job. I took a wide shot and then I cropped it using the editing features on the phone.

I usually like to pair inks with the pen's colour ( Visconti Burgundy would be perfect ) but I've dipped this pen in Fire and Ice to check out the shading -- not aptly captured by my iPad camera. Forgot to include the cap in this picture (!) -- I'm a fan of these Visconti clips.

Thanks to you all for your kind comments about my previous posts !

I inked this today using Sailor Tanna japonensis:

Delta Nazareth 2000, 18k re-tipped stub by Minuskin

I usually don't go in for fancy limited editions but this one is my favorite size of Delta, and with a Minuskin stub ... well, I was defenseless!

zaddick, I've seen those nibs done by Art but have never tried one - they look pretty sweet!

The tines look mis-aligned because they are mis-aligned. Adjustment and tuning are pending.

Visconti can make a true stub and this one is delightfully springy.

Yes! Visconti palladium stubs are quite wonderful. However, I find them a bit juicy and a bit too wide for everyday italic handwriting. I have had one on a HS Bronze customized by Michael Masuyama. It is now a 0.75 mm Cursive Italic and writes like a dream. I have another of these nibs on a Wall Street LE that will be on its way to Michael tomorrow for similar modification.

David- that is indeed a Balance 2 in cobalt glow. The nib is not the original that came with the pen. The factory nib is two tone and a bit different looking. I just sold mine but can dig out a photo if you want to see the original nib for the pen.

I think the pens are great looking but the material is famous for developing fractures. I would not post the pen nor use the clip over more than the thinest shirt, just to be safe.

Yes, that is a beautiful Balance II. Since reading here on fpn about their fragility, I will not take mine out of the house and am careful not to screw the cap on very tight or use the clip at all. But I keep it inked all the time and do use it regularly.

Thanks for the information and the caveat! I was not aware of this pen's fragility but will now act accordingly.

Thanks dcpritch! Glad you were able to adopt the 149 from a home of sandpaper and neglect.

I am mostly a lurker but felt like I should contribute. This is my only stubbish pen. I need to work on putting together a collection of stub pens.

Beautiful pen and nib, fpupulin! And I admire your several expressive scripts.

Here is my factory stub from Montegrappa, which recently substituted the original Fine nib on my Extra 1930 in Black Bamboo. I really like it!

Here it is at work with Diamine Classic Green.

Beautiful.. But may I ask what is the paper you used?

Above all shadows rides the Sun
And Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
Nor bid the Stars farewell.

This is Fabriano paper, a "Ingres vergata", 90 g/mq, cut to have the "catenelle" (direction of the paper fiber) parallel to the longer side. The lighter color is "avorio", the darker is "gialletto".

Thank you.. I hope I will find it here in Prague..
