Wow there are some great looking nibs being posted! Sorry for my weekend hiatus - family in town and the Superbowl kept me from posting for a few days.

Thanks bernardo, sexauerw, jar and Uncle Red for showing us some beauties!

LAMY 2000, 1st Generation

Today I decided to ink up a pen that makes a regular appearance in my rotation. I bought this pen a couple of years ago from a fellow FPNer who had lucked into it on a popular auction site. It turns out to be a First Generation Lamy 2K, made in 1966 or 1967: red "L" inside a white circle on the base, ball bearing clip without a "Lamy" imprint, "Lamy 2000 W. Germany" imprint around the base of the cap, "BB" imprint on the bottom of the section to match the nib, ... all the kinds of things a pen nerd like myself gets excited about:

fpn_1360014451__lamy_2000_bb_stub_2_1024x613.jpg

But I digress. We were talking about wide nibs.

Anyway, the seller had sent the pen to our own Pendleton Brown, who made the rhodium plated 18k BB nib into such a nice stub that, well, all I can say is that if you could write with this pen you would immediately send all your pens to pb2 for his "Butter~Line Stub" work, and you'd be incredibly happy when they arrived back from his shop. I've attached a writing sample.

I can see why I find it so difficult to find nice pens with stub nibs out in the wild - you lot have snapped them all up! lol

I am most certainly still impressed by all of the beautiful stub nibs - attached to equally beautiful pens - displayed in this thread.

The only difference is who made the nib and where it was made. My experience with stub nibs that came out of the FT Madison plant has been that they have all been smooth with great line variation and feel like a pen you have used all your life from the moment you first touch it to paper.

Oooh, I'm getting very envious! My only custom stub is a Nakaya B stub from JM, other than that I have a couple of factory ones - a Monteverde, a Passoporto (which I haven't actually tested??? Oh dear), an spare lamy safari 1.1 (also not tested), and a pelikan 400 OM which BEHAVES lika a stub. And, I'm at the brink of buying a Danitrio factory stub - I think... Haven't quite decided yet... Hm, when I think of it I thinke I HAVE decited. Another stub it is!!! Time to confirm the order - MUST RUN!!

Favorite of the day: Nakaya Naka-ai Heki tame.

Pelikan Souverän M1000

I bought this pen quite a while back from a fellow FPNer. It originally had an O3B nib on it, which was WIDE, wet and just too much for me to handle, plus I'm not especially fond of obliques. So I sold that nib and bought a BB (again, from an FPNer), and it was sent for work to John Sorowka (FPN: Oxonian) in Oxford. John is the consummate gentleman, a pleasure to work with, and did an amazing job in grinding the BB into a sweet writing stub.

fpn_1360169915__pelikan_m1000_bb_stub_1024x521.jpg

The green striated barrel has enough clarity to help one keep track of ink levels, especially important when one has a nib that lays down as much ink as this one.

fpn_1360170008__pelikan_m1000_bb_stub_2_1024x547.jpg

Here's a writing sample:

fpn_1360178700__pelikan_m1000_bb_stub_writing_sample_854x1024.jpg

fpn_1360178726__pelikan_m1000_bb_stub_writing_sample_1_1024x507.jpg

Ink used is Private Reserve Spearmint. You can see from the cross hatch that the nib has a little spring to it, so that with moderate pressure the width of the line will increase - not a huge amount, but enough to notice.

I took a photo of the M1000 next to a vintage 100N. One can definitely see the Pelikan lineage, even though it was actually the 1950s 400 that gave birth to the Souverän line. The green binde, black cap and turning knob, and gold trim is in my book just classic Pelikan styling.

I have a 3B nib I'll roll out on this thread at some other time, but here are some photos of the BB stub and the 3B, side by side, to give an idea of the size difference between these two nibs.

I'm a bit under the weather today so you don't get writing samples. You also don't get pictures of the new Visconti Wall Street that came in the mail today, it has a very wet stub.

Bill, your LM1 Flamme Red has been on my "must get" list for a long time, but I always seem to be a few minutes late to the party when I see them for sale, or else the one for sale has a skinny nib. Alas, I will continue to wait for one like yours. Great pen!

And I've never really been interested in Cross pens, but the one above is certainly a looker. How's the nib?

Chris, the MB is gorgeous, and your photography makes it look like a sculpture. Great stuff!

1940s Goldfink

I have owned a couple of Goldfinks and each time I get one I wonder why they aren't more popular; I only wish I could find a larger version (this pen is 125mm capped). At any rate the pen below is a fantastic example from this small German maker. I have heard some say the quality of these vintage pens is comparable to Montblancs and Soenneckens of the same era. I'll leave the arguing for others, but I can say that the two Goldfinks I've owned have been great pens with great nibs.

fpn_1360350216__goldfink_1940s_ob_627x717.jpg

Writing sample is made with Diamine Umber.

fpn_1360350246__goldfink_1940s_ob_3_985x1024.jpg

The 14k OB nib on this one has excellent ink flow at about 6/10 on the wetness scale, with nice, crisp edges and line variation typical of similar vintage nibs in this size. Which is to say, it isn't nearly as wide as modern Broad nibs, but it has the stubbish shape I've come to expect in wide and oblique nibs of similar vintage. The piston works flawlessly. I've been writing with this pen for about three weeks and have finally used enough ink to be able to show you one of my favorite features of this pen: the striated ink window - a very classy touch, I think.

Sometimes I like photos of nibs that have been in use more than when they are shown in their pristine state:

David,

I bought the LM1 directly from Andy Lambrou at the Dallas Pen Show last September and was able to get him to put that wonderful stub nib on it. I'll try to post a writing sample of it this evening sometime. I really like the pen, it's one of my favorites now and hasn't gone uninked since I first got it home.

The Cross is an interesting story. I bought it used and it had apparently been poorly treated or poorly stubbed. I've had a couple of nibmeisters work on it and it's great now. The nib is actually made by Namiki. Here's an old sample card of the pens that I had inked in April, 2009. The second line is the Cross, and the Stipula DaVinci that I posted on this thread earlier is also on this card.

I had gotten a bit behind on my photography while I had the flu, but I'm pretty much recovered now and am catching up. So here are some writing samples that I had promised plus one additional pen that I have not previously shown. The Monteverde has a really nice stub nib for an inexpensive pen.

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j66/sexauerw/WritingSamplesCP04MV01andVI05_zps25504bdb.jpg

The Peacock Blue ink in the LM1 is modern made in Ft. Madison. Probably one of the last batches before production was moved out of the USA. I don't know why I grabbed that bottle when I have eight or so bottles of the real vintage stuff.

Here are closeups of the Wall Street nib top and bottom. This is a glassy smooth nib and super wet, I will probably have to have it adjusted to be somewhat drier.

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j66/sexauerw/VI05ViscontiWallStreetnibunderside_zps1a052723.jpg

And here is a closeup of the Monteverde Invincia nib. It's a glossy black and very hard to photograph.
