Stub O' The Day

Man there are some gorgeous pens shown here, with fantastic writing. Pomperopero, you have a thing for vintage Wahl-Eversharp pens, don't you?! What a nib on that beauty! So many great entries, its hard to catch up after having been absent for a spell.

Here's a pen that unjustifiably doesn't get much play these days:

Since I'm at it, I may as well post another:

1920s Conway Stewart "The Seal Pen", 14k OM nib

A little research indicates this pen was made by Conway Stewart for British stationery company W.H. Smith. The "WHS" logo is found on both the nib and lever; the pen is made in a gorgeous red woodgrain hard rubber with matching feed. The writing sample indicates how nicely it writes.

Pompero, beautiful pen and even prettier italic. Photo composition also shows letter composition, ink character, and nib details. Well done!

I love this one. I adore demonstrators or pens that look like demonstrators. I still have your pen. The nib writes flawlessly. Sorry for the crummy photos.

David, it is so nice to have you back. This thread of yours was what got me interested in stub and oblique nibs, and I now have quite a collection. Please continue to show us more examples of your beautiful handwriting.

"... what a shovel!"

Indeed! That OMAS nib is amazing.

Is it a stock nib?

I posted these pics on another thread but they seem most appropriate here. The second pic is especially for Amberlea.

Well this is going to be a fun and enabling thread. I just picked up a stub. I'm pretty new at fountain pens and have come to them looking for the finest nib known to man. But out of boredom, I ended up receiving a Lamy 1.1 stub and some Seyes lined paper last night.

Wow... what a treat to write with this nib, especially with, an also new, sample of R&K Alt-Goldgrun. I am amazed at how much I'm enjoying this nib, it's feel, it's line, and the way it displays the ink like I've never seen before.

So I ask you who use stubs, why are they so attractive? Everything about it is clashing with my fine/extra-fine compulsion, but I just can't help it, haha. But seriously, are stub nibs something suitable for daily/office writing (with appropriate ink), or do you reserve your stub nibs for fun/letter writing?

Off to bond with this nib a some more... oh what ink next...

Many regards,

Well this is going to be a fun and enabling thread... Yep, that was the idea! :D

... I am amazed at how much I'm enjoying this nib, it's feel, it's line, and the way it displays the ink like I've never seen before. You won't get any argument here, we all love stub nibs and couldn't agree with you more.

So I ask you who use stubs, why are they so attractive? I feel like they make my writing look better, they usually don't feel scratchy (cursive italics nibs with their sharp corners are a possible exception), line variation is maximized, and they give ink every chance to show its beauty.

... are stub nibs something suitable for daily/office writing (with appropriate ink), or do you reserve your stub nibs for fun/letter writing? I can't speak for others, but I use stubs all day, every day, and that means taking notes in client meetings, marking up documents, writing notes and letters, making lists, etc.

Welcome to FPN!!!

Cheers, DAVID

I was lucky enough to pick up one of the last of these OMAS sets from Bryant at Chatterley. I haven't quite had the nerve to ink the BBB yet. The grey celluloid on this set is amazing.

How do you like the stock italic nib?

I like it a lot. Its crisper and broader than a lamy or twsbi 1.1, but without the sharp edges of a calligraphy italic like a sheaffer calligraphy italic. There is a lot of tipping on the point to keep the transition between the vertical and horizontal smooth. Its consistently wet making for a nice shader.
