Thank you David.

It's your usual beautiful italic script. Whenever I see your writing I get inspired to learn, but I lack the patience to do all the practice that it must entail.

A real handsome nib too. Enjoy!

I agree with tinta. :) David, your italic writing is beautiful and an inspiration to me as well. I really enjoy your photos.

I read this thread in one go a few days ago. It's wonderful. :D I'm happy to see it resurface again and again on the recent posts list.

Enjoy the ride. It is one of the most informative threads, particularly for those of us who love to use edged nibs.

Another of the pens I received last week from Michael Masuyama, after he had customized their nibs. This one is special not only by virtue of its visual appeal and how beautifully it writes, but also because the maker stopped doing business after 90 years shortly after I purchased this pen. :bawl:

It's a shame about the OMAS company. I will miss their sepia ink.

Your Ogiva Arco is a beautiful (celluloid?) pen, but what does the D mean in the OBBD designation for the nib?

The OBB I understand, as I used one daily for decades in a 1950s Pelikan 400NN.

You now have a lovely italic grind by Mr. Masuyama. Enjoy!

Thanks, Tinta!

"OBBD" - I assumed that the "D" referred to a right (as opposed to left) oblique. A search finds several references that confirm that assumption.

Hi,

A query on inks that work best with stubs.... I've committed to stub nibs... So most of the pens I purchase are selected if they have a stub

I've found that the ink -pen combination with stubs to be variable... Not all inks work well with stubs... I'm partial to black and combinations with black.... J Herbin inks have been dryer inks and poor companions...

Which contemporary inks have you found to work well with stubs in terms of wetness and shading?

Appreciate all and any advice...

My favourite is a mix of Pelikan 4001 inks: 5 parts Blue-Black to 1 part Brilliant Black. Mind you this is in a wet Pelikan 140 M stub semi flex. With a drier nib I would perhaps use a greater volume of Blue-Black and if necessary a droplet of surfactant on the end of a toothpick.

I'm glad to see some folks tuned in, and now here is one of my go-to pens:

Bexley Poseidon Magnum

This pen is made of a transparent tortoise acrylic, which as far as I can tell is a non-production color, and the section is made of the same material instead of the usual black acrylic, so this pen may well be a prototype - I'm not sure. There is just enough transparency to offer a hint of what's inside, but not the level of clarity so as to be considered a "demonstrator." I really like the thickness of this pen and, at 139mm, its length is perfect for a non-poster like myself.

The main feature of this lovely instrument is the nib - a stock Bexley 18k Stub nib made by Bock, unmodified but as sweet a writer as one could ever hope for. It is smooth, butter smooth, and yet there is enough ooomph left in the corners of the nib that it provides great line variation. The converter allows me enough ink to enjoy using this pen for several pages of writing, but with the wet line laid down by this wide nib I won't stray far from my ink source, especially if I'm sitting down for an afternoon of writing (which actually never happens, so no worries).

Here you can get an idea of the tortoise acrylic's transparency. I've noticed Shawn Newton has used this or a very similar material for some of his custom pens. I especially like the way Howard Levy used the same material in making the section.

And the nib:

That is a wonderful pen, and calligraphy is doing justice to the magnificent nib! Thank you for sharing this!
