markiv, you can find the review of the Swan Visofil here. The blind cap unscrews, then is is used as a plunger. There are two models of Visofil pens, if I remember correctly.

Nice - these don't come by often! It looks massive, akin to a hammerhead's snout.

That looks like a fantastic color of pen holding a great nib!

I love the new Delta Fusion nib and will bring one out for a complete display sometime soon.

Olivier, great nibs, I've been intrigued by the modern Onotos, especially when I learned that John Sorowka does much of the custom grinding work. But the pen you showed that really got me going is your Swan Visofil - now I really <<need>> one!

Ferrari da Varese Yesterday

I learned about Italian pen maker Ferrari da Varese through FPN's jar, who has so many silver pens I think he may once have worked for the Hunt brothers and been paid in silver after they tried to corner the silver market. Jar has illuminated the beauty of numerous sterling silver pens through his fantastic and informative reviews. Following his review of the FdV Yesterday I found myself with that familiar "must have" feeling we FPNers sometimes experience, and not long after I became the owner of this lovely pen:



I learned that FdV made two versions of the burgundy color Yesterday, identical except with respect to the color of the godrons (godrons are the vertical pin stripes - see jar's review for an excellent description of how they are made): the original, first year version of the Yesterday has a darker burgundy lacquer and all later versions have a slightly lighter version, as seen (if you squint) in the following photo supplied me by Franklin~Christoph, who formerly represented FdV in the US:



At the time I purchased my pen they had one remaining of the early, darker burgundy, so I chose that one.

My pen sports a two-toned 18k B nib which I sent to Pendleton Brown for some of his Butter~Line Stub mojo. Of course, he did a marvelous job.




Here's a writing sample. The B stub is very wide, with excellent line variation and a little bit of spring.



A few more pen shots. Unlike the Saratoga shown earlier, this pen is exceptionally pretty and the great stub nib makes it even more attractive.

And your Pilot Custom 823 - I've been thinking about one of those for a while but the Japanese B nibs, when modified to a stub, are just a wee too narrow for me. Now if I could find a BB nib to fit an 823, then I'd have something.

Bill's post just above, with those beautiful Sheaffer stubs, got me thinking about one I have:

Sheaffer Legacy I Heritage

This pen came to me through Mauricio Aguilar, as fine a gentleman as one could ever meet. He promised me that the stock Sheaffer stubs were absolutely amazing, and he was right. The inlaid 18k stub nib on this beauty is wonderfully smooth, has a little spring to it (being 18k gold), with excellent line variation. Somehow, the Sheaffer folks were able to ride the very fine line between smooth-writing stub and sharp-cornered italic, for a writing experience like few other nibs I have.





The machining pattern of this pen is known as Interrupted Barleycorn, a simple design of barleycorn guilloche interrupted by sold plain bars (to quote jar, who did an excellent review of this pen here). A very pleasing effect, and nice to hold in the hand. When I reach for a sterling silver pen this is the one I'm most likely to end up with.




Despite the beauty of the sterling silver, the nib is the truly amazing part of this pen:

I love the Sheaffer factory stubs too. Sheaffer call that pattern interupted barley corn and I'm fairly certain it is, or was, a standard production model of the Legacy Heritage. It's not a pattern one sees often on other brands.

I hear that the BB or even C and stub nibs, that are available for the 743, are the same 15 size as the 823 uses. And I also remember a post on FPN by someone who switched nibs between the two. Just a thought, not forcing anything upon you, of course...

The line variation is VERY subtle. If you want dramatic line variation, I'd suggest going with a B and getting it stubbed by someone.
