Stub O' The Day

Hi all, great contributions! Even though I've not posted here in quite a while I love to see when others show us their wonderful pens with stub nibs. I've posted pics of nearly half my stubs and will keep trying to put others up.

 

Conway Stewart 85L in Blue Herringbone, stub/italic nib

 

This is, in my opinion, one of the classiest looking pens ever made by Conway Stewart. The blue herringbone celluloid has great depth and is eye catching without making a scene. Every so often one runs across a vintage CS stub nib and they are invariably fantastic. This nib has a nice degree of flex, superb flow and very nice line variation. It is narrower than some stubs and so I use it for writing notes in the margins of documents, and for correspondence.

Here's a pen I no longer own that I regret having sold:

 

Nakaya Portable Writer in polished shu, 14k BB stub by Mottishaw

 

John Mottishaw of Nibs.com took mercy on me and traded the original B nib on this pen for a BB, then ground it to a wonderful stub. It wrote a bit on the dry side and, rather than tweak it to make it right, I sold the pen and ended up getting a very nice Neo Standard with a nib I liked even more. The Nakaya urushi pens are really something, and this one is no exception.

I believe the original post for this pen was responsible for getting me involved with stubs... nice nib with even nicer writing for sure

jar, that Signum is really quite something! I love the sterling accents, especially the threads between the barrel and section. First class!

The ink is J Herbin, Café des Iles

Must agree with da vinci... perhaps my next pen should be a stub / cursive italic M800. Already have an EF, very practical for note-taking, but doesn't show the flair that Occipital Lobe's M800 stub does.

Sweet Pelikan! John Sorowka is not only a nib magician but a first class gentleman and a pleasure to work with.

 

Here's an old pen, in the neighborhood of 100 years old, I think:

 

Waterman's 24 taper cap BCHR with gold repousse bands, 14k "New York" stub nib (c. 1910s)

 

I found this pen a few years ago at an antique store in Savannah, Georgia, killing time while waiting in line for a table at Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room (you must go there if you find yourself in Savannah!). The pen itself is in pretty good shape, especially considering its age, but the thing that caught my eye when I bought it and which I continue to love is the flexible stub nib. This nib has decent width and amazing flex, but is a bit unusual in that the tipping is very thin, almost sharp but not enough to catch on paper. I don't mind the idiosyncrasies of vintage eyedroppers, having resigned myself long ago to irregular flow when the fill begins to run out and the resulting inky fingers. The ink burps always remind me there have been enormous advances in fountain pen technology since the early days.

You´re absolutely right.

It is my first experience with a guy like him (trying to avoid the term "nibm**ster here).

There was a short but enormously rewarding mail-correspondance prior to the actual decision, and I was pleasantly surprised by his ability to understand what I wanted as well as his honesty about what he would be able to deliver.

I´m more than satisfied with the result.

 

You may be right that fountainpen technology has advanced enormously, but there´s still nothing quite like a vintage pen like the ones you display from time to time.

Pelikan M800 Blue O' Blue, 18C BB stub nib by John Sorowka

 

This pen had not been on my radar but last year I allowed a friend to talk me into buying it and don't regret it for an instant. The blue swirl material is quite lovely, even more so in person, and Pelikan's wonderful quality, filling system and nibs are well documented here so I needn't say more on that. The best part of the nib, of course, is the stub work done by John Sorowka, attested above by Occipital Lobe. This pen writes as nicely as it looks.
