Stub O' The Day

Recommended Posts

This post has inspired me. I ordered some stuff to smooth a couple nibs and fix the baby's bottom on my Jinhao's. Well, after looking at this thread I busted out my finest Japanese water stone (I sharpen my own knives), an 8k. I got the profile I wanted and smoothed it out on a couple pieces of micromesh. Doesn't compare to anything on this thread, but I'm happy for my first attempt at grinding a nib.

Looks good to me!

Thanks! I've got a couple more Jinhao's coming from China to practice on. Hopefully, I'll have ground a stub I'm really happy with soon!

So many inks, so little time...

Gorgeous looking pen! I might consider getting a custom-ground pen myself someday, as I keep seeing beautiful pictures like these. Did you find it easy to convey your wishes regarding size, smoothness, flow etc?

Thanks, it really is a nice thing to look at. Ordering it wasn't the big deal actually. I already have a few stubs, so I knew what to expect from a wet 0.8 stub and this isn't my first pen from Richard, so I know what to expect from his standard wetness (6/10). I could also specify a few details of how I write, etc.

So, the order process wasn't that big of a deal and the pen writes perfectly fine :)

I feel awful posting in the same thread as the rest of these BEAUTIFUL pens and writing samples. Especially dcpritch!

But I thought someone would benefit from these closeup comparison photos I took.

14664029282_2d6f064948_b.jpg

Lamy 1.1mm in each compared to:

Left: Twsbi Mini 1.1mm. Same size. Nod to the Twsbi for being smoother.

Middle: Pilot M Calligraphic. Obviously smaller, crisper. Writes fine in the plumix (but not in my metropolitan :crybaby: )

Right: Goulet #6 1.1mm. Obviously larger. Also, much wetter.

And yes, that is rhodia dot pad, for reference.

Will journal for food!

You amaze me every time with your pens!

She is a real beauty.

Besides the pens, your handwriting. Inspires me to practice more often to improve my scribbles ;)

Thanks for the kind words, I've been blushing for a week.

Hey that's great work! I have put stubs on a few pens where the tipping broke off a tine, or which resisted every effort at repair or smoothing. Sometimes they work out well, but rarely have I achieved the level of smoothness and flow that comes from a good nib technician.

... I'd expand his comments to include the other posters too......

I'm totally stubbed out by this wonderful thread......

Me too, ArchiMark - what makes this thread great are all the wonderful nibs, pens, writing, knowledge and other contributions from everyone who posts here.

Boy that is a great looking pen, and the nib looks wonderful - I bet its fun to use!

Nice comparison - thanks for showing us. I'm using a TWSBI Mini today, with a steel 1.1 nib, and it writes a fair bit drier than what I'm used to (a lot drier than my Lamy 2k stub!). I looked with a loupe and the tines are really tight starting about halfway from the breather hole. I think I may try to separate them a bit -- carefully -- to see if I can make it write wetter.

This thread just keeps on giving!

I have been following it since its beginning. Thank you dcpritch.

Here's my first lame attempt at photographing writing.

Oh, that *is* sweet! Well worth the wait and back & forth that was involved, nu?

Here's a first lame attempt at photographing my writing.

However,...the ink I was using was R&K Scabiosa, not Salix.

Lame attempt indeed......

Sorry!

Update on the Delta Fusion: from the looks of the nib and the sound of the bottle, it appears that the gold part is now on the bottom of a nearly full bottle of R&K Alt-Bordeaux... Doesn't seem to affect the flow of the pen, but, hey, I work in software engineering, not marketing, so what do I know :-)

Oh wow, does that ink sing. And such cool penmanship! I like everything about this one.

Very nice hand writing !

Can you advice Is this pen, is the nib was modified or is stock Sailor music nib ? I can not decided should I go for Pelikan M600 IO (Italic Oblique) or try Sailor with MS. I am also considering Sailor 1911Large with MS. I have all ready regular and large Sailor 1911 and large works slightly better for me.

Let me know your opinion.

Best Regards form Kraków !

My stub of the day is my own Jinhao x450 which I tried stubbing myself yesterday (I had some extra Jinhao nibs). Came out great! Now I have a smooth 1mm stub, more to my liking! :)

Pelikan oblique nibs are quite stubby and almost no line variation.I needed to let regrind my OM nib of my M800 to a more italic way by a local nibmeister.

I will take this in the opposite direction of quality. The grab bag that I got this in had a few more fountain pens but they are in the process of being cleaned up before I can use or show them.

After I fixed up my Pelikan Tradition "Italic" with some micromesh (skipping issues), it's become my favourite stub. I got it for only 90 dollars too.
