Stub O' The Day

MCWB, Thanks for showing us some great pens.

I love the color of the Delta Prodigio. One thing I've noticed about B nibs that are converted to stubs is they usually end up around 0.7 to 0.9mm in width, a little less than the 1.1 to 1.3 that I prefer. I'm guessing the Sheaffer Legacy I stub nib is in that wider territory (at least mine is).

My pleasure to do so; I have certainly enjoyed yours and others' in this thread. I'll try to put a couple more sometime soon.

Yes, your comments about B nibs ground to stubs are exactly what I think about my Prodigio's nib. I would love it to be another 0.2 mm wider, but I'm not sure that there's another one in existence like that so I jumped on it when I had the chance. :) The Legacy I stub is probably around 1.1 mm. I have another one that isn't inked at the moment that's a bit wider and cut bit sharper. It was quite interesting to compare the pair when I first got the second one: on paper they should be identical, but in practice there are obvious differences.

Oh and Bill, that green moire Targa... just wow!

I also love this thread! Here are some of mine.

Very nice pens. I love the Legacy stub nibs, they're more like true italics - lots of line width variation.

I'm also partial to the Legacy stubs.

Presumably I could converse with the mermaid with the human upper half and thereby not be so lonely. So I would choose that one.

I'm excited, so my humble offering:

I was going for a stub for normal writing, though I would really like to have a bigger CI to learn some calligraphy, too. Sadly, I don't have any other donor nibs unless I attack my Safari M, but that is my only larger nib so I'm hesitant. I thought about going beyond tipping and making something bigger with this, but the feed of the Ahab is too huge.

Now I need to learn to use this thing...

There is nice line variation there especially if it's a smooth as you say. Looks line a great first grind to me.

Bill, those S.T. Dupont stubs look pretty darn nice!

Sweet Danitrio pen, put to great use! Thanks for the drawing and interesting dilemma; I agree with Bill about which half.

I really like the Delta Fusion nib.

Bruce, great nib - you figured out how to make those Venus nibs flow well, it looks. I've always found them to be fairly dry writers. Nice pen, too!

Looks like you've done a splendid job on that first grind. For myself I prefer to start with a wider nib in order to maximize line variation, but I've seen F nibs made into F stubs.

Greg Minuskin does a great job, no doubt about it!

Waterman's 42, flexible 14k stub by Minuskin

This is a safety pen, a style I've come to appreciate more and more. The smooth GF overlay adds quite a bit of weight but I find it is perfectly balanced and makes for a very nice writing pen. Greg Minuskin's retipped stub is sublime. This nib is very wet and about the only paper that will accept all the ink it lays down is Tomoe River. But with that paper there aren't many pens more fun to use than this (nearly) 100 year old baby.

You amaze me every time with your pens!

She is a real beauty.

Besides the pens, your handwriting. Inspires me to practice more often to improve my scribbles ;)

Thanks

This post has inspired me. I ordered some stuff to smooth a couple nibs and fix the baby's bottom on my Jinhao's. Well, after looking at this thread I busted out my finest Japanese water stone (I sharpen my own knives), an 8k. I got the profile I wanted and smoothed it out on a couple pieces of micromesh. Doesn't compare to anything on this thread, but I'm happy for my first attempt at grinding a nib.
