Stub O' The Day

I may have posted this before but it's in use today. The ink smells like Cherry Cola so a certain song pops into my head when I use it.

The top two are the stubs currently in use. ...

Personal Foul - 15 yard penalty and 24 hour cessation of posting privileges due to flagrant display of ridiculously desirable pens (aka "RDPs"), especially the Sheaffer S5. You may avoid the penalty by sending certain pens to the originator of this thread for an unspecified period of time.

Uncle Red, I think that nib and ink combo, used with a red J, would be perfect. Are the Osmiroid nibs sharp on the corners, like an italic, or more smooth? I've never tried one but have always wondered about that.

TWSBI 580 with custom cursive italic stub by Tyler Dahl. http://tylerdahlpens.com/customnibs.html#buynib. I gather he made this from a standard TWSBI "B" nib. He says he can also sharpen up TWSBI factory stubs and I'm considering having him work on one of their 1.1 stubs.

Just want you regulars to know how inspirational I find this thread. Every time it circulates to the top I drool over all the eye candy in the thread and get the urge to go send out a bunch of handwritten notes.

Very happy to see this thread come back to life! :D

The Sheaffer nibs in a stub, particularly the factory version are wonderful (I prefer nails to wet noodles).

For users of broad and wider stubs, do you write with these pens as you would a usual round tipped pen, or do you have to maintain a a certain nib angle to obtain the sweet spot?

My 1.5mm stub TWSBI 580 loaded with Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses... and a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night.

Just picked up this new old stock from Danitrio, with an 18k Stub. Nice pen! Sorry, the pics are from an iPhone, bad light etc. From Pentime.

I almost bought one of these from Chatterley Pens...They had them for about a hundred bucks. Your post makes me wish I had done it. Argh!

Actually, the penalty should be that the pen(s) in question should be rotated to all contributors to this thread, beginning with the OP, before being returned to the owner of the pen(s) in question. :lticaptd:

It depends on how crisply the nib is ground. Many stubs are not too demanding about the angle, although you can't go totally wild about rotation. But 10 or 20 degrees is frequently OK. But crisper grinds, such as are commonly found on Sheaffer factory stubs, are much more demanding. With these you do have to stay within a very few degrees of the sweet spot. It seems that there are many different definitions of stub, almost as many as there are people who make them. And the line between stub and cursive italic is pretty blurry. Same problem, no standard definition for either term.

I support that. Saskia, please send the pen forthwith to me and I will begin its circulation among those who have posted to this thread.

I suspect we will see a sudden surge in posts.

I was thinking of how to answer and sexauerw has answered much more clearly and succinctly than I could have. For me, I have used stubs for such a long time that the writing angle is well practiced and comes naturally, and is actually how I use all my pens unless I am going very slowly with a flex nib (which rarely happens).

This one is picky about the angle to the paper but after that it's pretty smooth. It's untipped so it's like the TWSBI nibs.

It was such a challenge to find that pen! In the end, a friend who knew I had been looking for years bought it for himself, and after a year of me needling him and him eventually getting bored of it (he hates stiff nibs), he agreed to sell it to me. :P I have a PdAg version too (an S4) which I love, but it took years to find an S5. It's on a thin model, but I was desperate, so I took it.

Now I just need a reasonably priced music nib! The last one I saw was a think model and they wanted $450 CAD for it. I'm still thinking about it, but probably that is more than I'm willing to pay.

I received an Esterbrook SJ pen in green with a 9284 nib yesterday. It's a very nice stub, although far from the best.

It is a nice pen. It is all metal, reminds me of the Italix from Penman in England, but the nib is one of a kind. Nice stub on this one. I got another with a medium nib, different body, and it is a very nice writer

Great looking original nib, and beautiful writing. What ink is that?
