I tried filling the barrel of mine with water and, sure enough, it leaks. So, i looks like your pen is not faulty, the model (unlike, say, the Trinity) probably just was never intended as an eyedropper.

 

I'm unable to unscrew the metal disc, otherwise it might have been possible to use some silicon grease.

I've tried Hari's link, and they only ship within India...does anyone know another site that sells Camiin elegantes and SD's? I love giving Kevin at FPR my money, but $50 for an SD from Kevin compared to $10 locally makes me want to initially look elsewhere if at all possible.

Hope there's someone out there who can help.

I finally got a Camlin Elegante! I ordered one online yesterday and today I stopped at a stationary shipped and they had them, so I got one from them. So soon I'll have two.

 

The pen is great quality for the price. It feels strong, the cap fits and clicks well. The nib is fantastic, very smooth with just a hint of resistance which is exactly how I like it.

 

It definitely feels of far better quality than the 190 rupees ($3) that I paid for it. The Hero 616 is a similar price and I would say that this pen looks, feels and performs 5 times better.

Camlin is a very old stationery goods manufacturer based in my city Mumbai in India. The majority stake of the company was sold last year by the son of the founder, to the Japanese stationery giant Kokuyo. Speculation was rife about the future of Camlin, but it appears that under the Kokuyo management, Camlin is going to continue to make more fountain pens. The Elegante is the first new model to come out, and the Sharad Dandekar aka SD pen has also been re-issued with some price adjustments.

 

The Elegante is a cartridge converter pen, features a plated brass snap cap and can be filled as an ED in addition to C/C, thanks to the fine section threads. The nib is gold plated steel with a nicely finned modern plastic feeder.

 

The pen comes packed in a simple triangular carboard packing with a slide out cardboard pen tray. i immediately discarded the packing after taking pics

The pen is very well built in my opinion, considering the 180INR (3.5USD approximately) that I paid for it. The pen wrote consistently well from the first stroke itself. Superb achievement Camlin-Kokuyo!

Interesting that in India the pen costs the equivalent of $3.50 USD but the price to purchase one that comes to the U.S. is $22.00 which does not include shipping. It seems that anyone traveling round-trip from the U.S. to India might do well to buy a bunch of the pens and resell them when they came back home. Or simply took orders from people here then bought them over there and sent then out when they returned to the U.S.

I went to the web site and the only thing I didn't like was that you had to create an account with all the personal information before I can see any prices. Several times in the past I created an account and before I knew it I was getting lots of spam. On top of that, because I used my real name they actually tracked down my business email addresses.

 

I may just wait a little before I sign up.

 

It's good to hear that you have had good experiences. I liked the Pilot EDs as they have the nice Pilot nibs.

 

Would you do a favor for me (if you are comfortable doing it) just one time? If you are, I am curious as to the cost of the Pilot Tank ED pens so if you will check on that and let me know the cost, if I am interested in buying, I will be more willing to risk creating an account.

Is Camlin Elegante better than Parker Vector or Chine pen like Baoer ?

Price has increased and Camlin Elegante availale @Rs.200/- locally.

Other India brand are become rare and I could not find.

While in India for our annual leave visited CROSSWORD at Lulu Mall in Cochin, Kerala (where we hail from). In a corner stand there were FPs a few Vectors, Frontier Black Matt, Camlin SD a dozen of them and a lot of Camlin Elegante. Got one SD Maroon & Parker Frontier for me and Elegante Maroon for my daughter.

 

Wonderful pen this is. Writes smooth with some feedback but not irritating. My kid has turned to be a FP fan now. Elegante is her everyday favourite though she likes her Lamy Al Star Deep Purple a lot.

Thanks for the wonderful reviews! I just got a Camlin Elegante as well after waiting for almost a month of shipping delays, and it writes excellently. Reminds me of my younger days when I used to have a Camlin ED pen with Camel Royal Blue Ink. Well, the ink never changed once in the last 20 years or so, and I am back to using a Camlin pen with it. Yay!

 

On a separate note, I am new to this forum and am pleased to have stumbled across this. I thought I was the only one to continue using fountain pens, as I could not even find ink bottles in the major stationery stores in the US and people used to look at me with a quirky expression every time I pulled out a fountain pen. I even stocked up on a LOT of ink out of fear that the ink company might go out of business. But I am glad to have been wrong! With such a vibrant community, my fears seem to have been misguided.
