Hello From Derbyshire

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm Jim, I'm tubby and have always wanted to be a pirate, unfortunately I can't grow a beard, struggle with a sextant and don't sport any prosthetics....so I thought I'd become a Stylophile (sounds better than Penist :happyberet: )

I used to draw/sketch with pen and ink a decade or so ago and would like to take up this hobby again. I am ordering my first pen this evening which will be the Noodler's Ahab, the flexible nib, ease of cleaning, the large ink capacity of 4.8 mls and the picture of Moby Dick appeals to me. However, I have a feeling this could be the first of a few pens as I am rather interested in Calligraphy also.

That's me then, I'm sure I'll bump into some of you on the forum.

Kind regards

Jim

Welcome to FPN, Jim. I'm so glad you've joined us. You're right about one thing - you can't just have one fountain pen, well you can, but I'm betting you'll be as addicted as the rest of us in just a few minutes.

Welcome !

Pirate ? I always wanted to be William Holden, bombing the Bridges Of Toko Ri,

in my beautiful blue Banshee.

Stylophile is even better than "Penaphyliac". Boy, that turns a few heads !

What kink of ink are you using in the Ahab ?

Thank you all for your welcomes. I have ordered some Noodler's bullet proof black, I wanted a waterproof ink as I will do watercolour washes over some of my sketches.

Thanks Pen Nut, it's nice up round there, I'm a bit further south just outside of Chesterfield. I've only done a bit of Clay pigeon but thoroughly enjoyed it even though I wasn't much cop.

Arrrr, Jim lad.

Sorry, that was me lapsing into Long John Silver mode ... Robert Newton in Treasure Island, eh?

Well, you did say you wanted to be a pirate! If I can be an outlaw, then why not?

As for the shooting, I should think those pigeons were rather (Clay) cross about it.

I'm from just a few miles away along the A617 over the M1 and across the border in the Sheriff's county ... Mansfield, to be precise.

:W2FPN:

Ayup and welcome to this merry band. You will enjoy being here.

Hi, Jim... :W2FPN:

Would be nice to see some of your sketches.

You'd probably change your mind when you saw them :ltcapd:

Oh, I don't think so. I've always liked the idea of being able to sketch, but any attempts have been abysmal. In a way I'm glad, because that's why I got myself a camera, and discovered photography.

Anyway, Jim, I think you'll find that the members here are very supportive, and encouraging, so don't be shy. ;)

I was driving back from Mansfield along the A617 just the other day, hope you've been keeping warm these past few days.

Thank you for the welcome, I used to do a bit of Archery too http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sport020.gif

Did you hear about a pirate ship carrying a booty of blue paint that crashed into a pirate ship with a cargo of red paint?

........They were marooned.

:headsmack: Groan!

So you are a possible candidate for this merry band of Sherwood outlaws. I really like the little archer you included. I have not seen that one before. I shot with Welbeck Archers more years ago than I dare think about and even learned bowmaking under Keith Gascoigne at KG Archery. Rather appropriate for this part of England, I think. Now I prefer field archery to target ... it's closer to the real purpose of the weapon, although it's many years since I've flung any wood. At one time, it was hardly safe to walk in Thieves Wood and I lost several fine arrows there.

Rowbo (not the Cop) also lives in Mansfield and Twissy the penmaker lives in Annesley.

So you are in good company.

I was lucky enough to make a longbow under the supervision of Chris Boyton and shot with the Bognor Regis Archery Club a few years back now, I too have not loosed an arrow for quite some time but I still have the bow. I agree about field archery, lots more fun.

Hi Jim

As Sherwood Forester rightly says, I too live in Mansfield so there is a growing throng of Merry Men in this neck of the woods.

However, I am a Derbyshire man by birth - thick in the arm and thickquick in the head, as they say. Wirksworth was my home town for the first fifteen years of my life.

Talking of Welbeck Archers, do you know Roger Elliott (not sure if the number of l's and t's is correct) - I worked with him for several years until he retired recently.

I'm thinking of taking up thievery to finance this hobby I have ...

:eureka: I knew those Lincoln Green tights would come in useful one day. :ninja:

Hi Rowbo, good to hear from you again.

Roger's name rings a bell with me but perhaps I'm recalling "Roger, Roger" from 'Airplane' ("What's your vector, Victor?")

Incidentally, I bought a wooden pen from Scribblings at Wirksworth just a few months ago.

All the best

Alan

PS : In this weather I'm happy to wear any color of tights ... but don't tell my wife
