Hmm...I could see it's possible to fake the ink & bottle, but to be honest I don't see how it would be worth the counterfeiter's time as the profit margin is much higher on the pens.

Over the holidays, there were some bottles of MB ink selling for $80+ on eBay.

How much would a bottle of Racing Green go for?

Someone posted (within the last 3-4 months) about a bottle of fake ink. I can't find that post right now.

I have a bottle of Toffee Brown that I bought at the local MB boutique a few weeks ago and it has the silver ring on the cap. I'm thinking it might just be a design change and the FPH didn't update their product photo.

Did they sell though? If they did I'd be amazed and I would question the sanity of the buyer.

I doubt it would be worth the effort but I guess if they can make something cheap enough then they will try.

I wonder though how many bottles of ink are sold on ebay in comparison to pens? I know that I would never buy ink from ebay as it is readily available in store and once you've added postage I doubt the saving would be worth the effort of searching for suitable ink online - I'm lazy like that

Yes, there are fake Montblanc inks as well as RB/BP cartridges. We still have a "fake" ink detector in our shop just for those occasions. Due to some inks selling out quite fast, they do command a high price on eBay some of the times. The recent two that's been selling very well has been the Einstein as well as the Swift. Some of the Season Greetings inks sells pretty fast as well.

It sells as fake because people are unsuspecting that it could possibly be a fake until their pen gets clogged up, and because they are fast moving disposable goods, there is much less blowback from exploited buyers. Also, there would still be quite a high margin on these inks as they wouldn't be very expensive to replicate, and users are much more likely to question the reliability of their pen than look at the ink, or at least look at both equally.

To be safe, and considering inks are not as expensive as pens of equivalent level (i.e. parker quink & lamy safari, or iroshizuku & a visconti HS), I always buy inks in B&M stores. Also, its fun to try them out first :D

These pictures show the difference between the old version of Mb ink bottles and the latest version. I would say that they look authentic

Wow - I never would have thought this was likely or even possible. :yikes:

Thanks for letting us know!

how would you tell a fake one? like this one, can you tell? http://www.ebay.com/itm/110999707037?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Are the ones marked "W. Germany" ever faked?

edit: on a different note, is it possible to know what color that ink is just from the pictures?

The example you show doesn't look like a fake. Although the Chinese can and do make copies of Montblanc items they usually do something slightly different because of infringing the copyright. i.e the trademark symbol is frequently a black snowcap rather than a white one, or some minor detail like that.

I have seen this seller sell authentic Montblanc items before and I believe that he wouldn't risk a long ebay suspension by selling a fake bottle of ink for $8, when the authentic version originally cost about that price new.

It's not always easy to know what colour the ink is unless the seller puts it in the description. However, you can usually work out reds, greens and purples depending on whether it's the old version of bottle or the new version

? Would those making copies of anything give regard to infringement of copyright, surely making the item as realistic as possible is their only concern ? :hmm1:

I guess it would be an easy thing to fake, especially when a new colour comes out. Because we've got no idea what it's supposed to look like.

Basically, if you could fake the bottles, you could fill it with anything from cheap bulk ink to coloured water.

But the question remains: Is it worth the effort for something which is (relatively) inexpensive and doesn't sell in huge numbers?

As lamchum, I also buy inks from B&M stores.

Well assuming that the bottles are made in China, I supposed it wouldn't be hard for them to make more or use the ones that don't make it past QC.
