Hæmatic Red Ink

Sorry if this has been asked before. Which inks most resemble dried blood? Not bright, fresh blood. Perhaps blood after a few hours of exposure. (In case you're wondering, I'm looking for a red suitable for body text.)

Hi!

I traded away my Noodler's Antietam because that's exactly what it looked like to me - dried blood. That would be my suggestion, but I've not tried many inks.

I'm sure you'll get lots of other suggestions!

I've heard it said that Private Reserve Black Cherry looks a little like dried blood (although I don't, thankfully, know what real blood looks like after several hours' exposure :D). Perhaps someone who actually owns the ink can confirm this or give a sanguine denial.

I've used and love PR Black Cherry. It doesn't look like dried blood to me because I don't see any brown in it.

How about Noodler's Walnut? (I'm not joking...)

I once had the misfortune of sprinkling water droplets on a page written with the Walnut, and the tiny blots almost looked like blood creeping from the letters

Recent testimony by our own umenohana and kissing has it that FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown produces the desired effect. (Although the image of the gentle Hana as bloodied butcher simply does not compute. )

Pelikan Blue-Black mixed with Pelikan Red in 1:1 ratio gives very close color to one you are searching for. In a wet writer, the color is just like that signature on the contract with the devil... :o

De Atramantis Carmie Red is what you need. It is exactly the color of dried blood, and for this reason a good Doctor friend of mine uses it.

Good luck getting some though, only sold in Europe and Toronto as far as I know.

Cheers,

Just bought De Atramantis Bordeaux Red, it is amazing rich and dark. A bunch of people have commented it resembles blood. Check out the palate for yourself at

I agree with CasmiUK, I sold my bottle of Antietam for the same reason. I work in a hospital and didn't want any problems :D

Also IIRC looking like blood was the whole point of the ink, as the ink is named after a famous Civil War battle ground.

Yay! Samples arrived!

The scan is kind of off. The less saturated parts are less purple-looking on paper.

Just sat looking at pages of equations I wrote in PR Burgundy Mist (Vintage CS Broad Stub) and it does look remarkable like dried blood, and I should know (orthopaedics is messy). Problem is when blood dries it clots, so you'll have thin smears of lighter red, then areas that are almost black/brown. And that doesn't begin to involve venous (dark blue-red) vs arterial blood (bright red).

But, for what it's worth, PR Burgundy Mist looks close if it's laid down wet enough.

I wonder if a few units of heparin would prevent clogging from Burgandy Mist :D

Oh, bother...

I've got the Tiananmen, but it looks like I'll have to order some Antietam. For me, the Tiananmen is a bit bright for everyday use (great for grading, though) so this mix looks like a great way to bring more red to ordinary writing.

Plus, I'll admit... as creepy as blood-red ink sounds, it's a pretty cool idea :D Then again, maybe I'm just a bit odd

All the best,

Mike

I have asked that same quesion at alt.collecting.pens-pencils . Here are answers I have got there and somewhere else:

  • Noodler's Ink Tiananmen
  • Noodler's Ink Widow Maker
  • Noodler's Ink Tiananmen + Noodler's Ink Widow Maker
  • Noodler's Ink Tiananmen + Noodler's Ink Antietam
  • Parker Quink Red + add Parker Quink Black until satisfied
  • J. Herbin Encre Rouge Fuschsia + enough Sheaffer Skrip Black
  • Private Reserve Fiesta Red
  • Noodler's Ink Antietam
  • Private Reserve Black Cherry
