Sheaffer's Balance pencil

Ok I have looked inside, and there is nothing obvious. If someone could show me a picture of what the inside of the cap is supposed to look like, I could compare the two together and see whats wrong.

It's tough to get a good shot up into the cap, but I can get a probe into my early '40's pencil up past the point where the clip is attached, which should be plenty of room to accomidate an eraser, assuming it's roughly the same diameter as the metal barrel it fits into. If there is anything inside the cap that is lower than that it shouldn't be there and is most likely an old eraser and metal holder. Jeff

Evan,

What I think Jeff is suggesting is to use a convenient piece of material - dowel, drill bit, chopstick etc. as a probe to insert in the pencil cap to measure the free depth. use your thumbnail to mark the place the edge of the cap comes to when the probe is inserted as far as it will go into the cap.

Using that measurement, compare with the part of the pencil that should go into the cap. There should be excess space in the cap - that is, there should be enough for the part of the pencil which normally goes into the cap plus an allowance for the eraser to stick up as well. If the space is just a little more than the basic pencil part, it suggests that the old eraser or eraser plus the metal holder (or something else) is stuck in the cap and will have to be removed. It's likely you'll need an assortment of dental picks to get it out, unless the cap has a removable top (jewell, tassie, clip screw etc.).

Regards,

Gerry

Ohh! I thought jirish was talking about using a dental video camera probe to show what the inside looks like! I'll try that! Thanks!

I'm low tech- I used a long, thin philips head screwdriver. Incidently, when I tried it I found that I had an old eraser stuck in the end of my cap (though it was far enough in that it didn't effect the cap posting properly.) I guess this isn't an uncommon problem... Jeff

Well...Its been a while since the last post, hasn't it? Well, I finally got the eraser out. I put it off because I had been using my other pencil, but I ended up filling the matching pen and couldn't stand not using its pencil so I took the cap downstairs and got a drill and drilled into the eraser and its metal covering. It took me a while, but finally it popped out. Now the only problem is that the cap is REALLY hard to get off the rest of the pencil. The eraser fits fine, but its almost impractical to use the eraser because the cap is so hard to get off. Any tips? Thanks!
