picked up a few loupes from pro-camera stores a while back (to look at slides not nibs)... picked up a few more from scientific supply stores for more professional applications. I actually don't use any of them to look at nibs - I look at my nibs from photographs taken with a Nikkor 105 mm macro lens, but i can see how loupes can be very useful if you are working on your nibs. See you all next saturday!...

Heh heh. Amro wins the magnification prize. How many hairs on a bee's back...?

I'll bring along a couple of my magnifiers as well. Sheesh! We could start an optics club, too...

Can anyone give me a sample of Akkerman's Diep-Duinwater blauw for the January 19th meet?

I tried it at the last meet and am thinking of ordering a bottle in the not too distant future.

I can bring a sample. Or if you prefere a bottle from which you can fill up a pen, or a few.

My 823 is still inked with that. It's an amazing colour, probably my favourite Akkerman. :D However, I'll let raging.dragon bring you a sample, as I will already be loaded down with paper and ink and a few pens I want to sell. Seriously, how did I get so much stuff???? It's ridiculous.

Great Meet yesterday guys!!! There are getting better and better...

So, who is the one doing the Akkerman group buy? I have reviewed the colors on the Akkerman page and decided on two bottles (Diep Duinwaterblauw and Bekat Haags)

The page is here for anyone to check.... (Mags?)

It's good to know these dates are organized well in advance. I will be coming to Toronto this year and it'll be great to meet pen people there.

Thank you for the warm welcome Cyber6.

I am excited about meeting my fellow pen people myself and am very much looking forward to the meeting. Things are up in the air at the moment but it could be as early as March.

>>Locations will be at CAMH, 250 College Street, room 801 at 11:15 AM<<

Does this mean that we no longer are eating brunch during the meetup?

Hello Everyone!!

I have been lurking on this website for a while now but never got a chance to say Hello. I feel very happy to see so many people from Toronto sharing the same passion as mine. I go to York University and believe me I could not find a single fountain pen enthusiast among 63,000 students. I never knew that FPN also held meetups. Well I hope to see you all on the February meetup.

Also I would like your advice on pens from Canada. I have been to few stores and did visit some Canadian websites but either the collection is limited or the prices are extremely high. I would like any recommendations from all. I think Pengoulet.com is good website with ok shipping cost but does any one order anything more than $100 from them if so did you get dinged by customs. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I've ordered ink samples from the Goulets and bought most of my pens from other US retailers plus a few from Europe. With international orders shipped via the post office, sometimes you get charged HST, sometimes you don't. If your order is shipped via UPS or FedEX you will always be charged HST, and depending on service level their brokerage fees may be high.

EDIT: I assume you've looked at Alexander Pen Co.?

So one should deviate away from UPS and FEDEX to save the customs? I have looked at above suggested website, there are only three brands that are being carried and 50% of the stuff is out of stock. I am looking forward to purchase my first mid-end level pen which might exceed $150 and dont intend to pay $100 in duties alone. Thank you for the reply.
