Pay It Forward 2013

OK...I have a 40% full bottle of PR Dakota Red that I'd be pleased to PIF to the most persuasive response I can get before a week from today to the following question, coming from someone in CONUS:

Even though I'm red-green colorblind, I still see red pretty well, unless it's near green or brown. So why can't I find a red I like?

Tim

(the CONUS requirement isn't some form of xenophobia or isolationism... postage costs have risen so high that the ink won't be worth the cost of shipping elsewhere...)

PS I forgot to add...contact me via PM.

I have a Lamy NEXX M in orange (cap) and silver (barrel and clip) that I want to give away into a good home.

Good home means the pen gets used instead of rotting away in a dark drawer. Designwise this pen is an oddball and you have to get used to the shape but if you do it is one of the most comfortable pens to hold and write with. It is big, similar to a Safari but with a grip section that is covered with a soft, gumlike material.

It takes cartridges or a converter. The best thing about this pen is the nib - it is a stub that I have reground from the standard medium nib the pen once came with. This nib writes buttery smooth and has been adjusted to a good inkflow. It gives some line variation from 0.3 to 0.95mm and adds character to the writing. For it is based on a Z50 nib it can be swapped of course. The pen is a real workhorse. Good for people who write a lot - journals, essays, examina, whatever.

The building quality of this Lamy NEXX M is flawless.

I`ll send it worldwide in an envelope, together with some Lamy cartridges.

Now the rules:

1.) You are a fountainpen collector in need of a cheap EDC or tossaround pen that you can take everywhere without having to fear that it might get lost or stolen.

2.) You like smooth stub nibs.

3.) You can explain why I should send you the pen.

I`ll expect your PMs until midnight, which is four and a half hours from now.

First off, I would like to thank all ten of the applicants that were willing to indulge me in my silliness. Now, it is time to announce the winner of the empty, vintage Sheaffer Skrip bottle...drumroll please...okay this is embarrassing: we don't have a clear winner. You heard right. With ten applicants choosing from amount 10s of billions of primes smaller than a trillion (thesnark, you are free to publish the exact number of eligible primes at this time), we actually managed a tie.

Both glinn and thesnark submitted 2,147,483,647. This number is an eligible prime (a particularly romantic and pernicious Mercenne prime at that [which presumably makes this tie less unlikely than it might otherwise seem]). This number happens about a couple hundred-millions off from my randomly selected prime (251,012,155,531)--closer than any other guess submitted to my PM inbox.

So, I'm at a bit of an impasse, having not established any tie breaking procedures ahead of time (I mean, who'd a thunk I'd get 2 of the same prime at all, let alone two of the same that were within 250 million of my own?). Well it just so happens that I actually have 2 vintage Sheaffer Skrip bottles in my possession. So, I suppose, rather than flipping a coin or demanding a duel, I will award both glinn and thesnark the promised gift of a Skrip bottle. If the two winners will be so kind as to PM me their respective mailing addresses, I will be delighted to pay them their due. One of the bottles has some Permanent Red #2 still left in it, so I will find a suitable container to empty it into over the weekend so that both bottles are ready to go on Monday. Congrats!

I have had quite a few replies now so just giving this a bump.

Could people please let me know where they are (geographically)?

I continue to be so grateful for the library of wisdom I find here. Here's just another thank you. I've been playing with using ultra-suede with my pen wraps lately, so here's one. Given the chats I've seen about men's taste and women's taste, I did try to make a gender neutral wrap. Of course, given the mysteries of the male mind, I may have gotten it all wrong.

So, anyone is eligible. Just PM your interest. I'll do a drawing next Thursday evening sometime. The giveaway, of course, is for the wrap only. It holds four pens, cotton fabric on the outside and flap, ultra-suede for the lining and pen pocket.

Thanks again to everyone here at FPN.

That is a beautiful wrap. In other circumstances, I'd PM you in a second. But, not too long ago I got my PiFfed wrap from Craig, and it is meeting all my pen wrap needs for now. It follows the same pattern but has five slots for pens. I am very happy with it, and wish all contestants for this one good luck.

OK everybody, it has been a while since my last PIF (almost a year actually). It is time for something new. I have two Noodlers Konrad pens on offer to a lucky winner. Please see the description below because these are heavily used pens.

I have had these pens for a long while and have tinkered with them a great deal. As a result, they are very temperamental. The feeds have been hacked up and set multiple times, and the nibs are slightly banged up. The pistons in both pens work, but in one of them I had to use a dab of glue on the threads holding the piston in the barrel because it had become loose.

I recommend only submitting an entry if you are looking for a project. If you do not like to tinker, these are not for you. If you get easily frustrated with pens that sometimes do not work, these are not for you. I have had a good time and learned a bit from these pens, but it is time to pass them on.

I will do a blind drawing using a random number to choose one recipient for these Konrads. If you would like to enter the drawing, please PM me before midnight on August 1 (eastern standard time--US) and make it clear either in the subject or body of the PM that you want to be included in the PIF. I will make the drawing sometime shortly after that. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

I'm just bumping this because I'll be drawing for the wrap evening after next.

Meanwhile, thank you for all the lovely comments I've been receiving in the PMs I've been getting -- particularly from the men who've let me know they like the wrap.

Well that pen roll was a surprise. Thank you. I was not expecting that or the Limerick. I will get a decent pen one day.
